For a month before Christmas every d pious Greek has observed a rigid fast, says a traveler, cons2cuentl vhe "table,"I on that day is spread in every house, produces somcthirg akin to fes tivity. t fri,-nuls of the evening before begged me to sit down and partake of the meal that they La'! irepared. It I was somewhat of a struggle to me, I must own. for I exnectd it would not be served hi very inag:ificent style. Still, I was not prenarea for what actu- - ally happene. On a suall round table 'was placed a perfect mountain of iacaroni and cheese -not such cheese as we are accustomed to put with ors, but coarse shee rs milk cheese, which stung my mouth like mustard, and left a pungent taste therein which tarr-id there ft,r days. Then there were no plate_s, no forks, no spoons. The master of the house had a knife with which he attacked the dish, and 1 the one which on ordinary occasions fell I to the misl ress was now kindly placed I at my disposal. As for the rest of the family, thcy were an example of the adage that fingers were made before forks, and these fingers grew perceptibly cleaner as th:- meal progressed. What a meal it was, indeed; as if it were a contest in gastronomic activity. Yet it was -leasant to see the appetite with which great and small entered into the contest and fille1 their mouths to overflowing wih the savory mass. I was left behin-i in the contest, and had, I fear, to toll rman- untruths concerning my appetite afl the e'xcellence of the dish, and' gra-.t was my ' relief when it was removed and dried fruits and nuts took its nlacc. To drink we ha-l resinate I wile--that is to say, wine which a bI stored in a keg covered with rein insi-i,. which gives the flavor s) much rlihed by the Greeks, but which is ahzit as unpa1ata ble to an Englishman as IG or n:ut be to those who drink it for the irst t;7. I dressed up in fur rugs and traps as Santa Claus, and had arranged to drive the donkey into the reception room and distribute the gifts from the well laden go-cart. The dog was to remain i:n the little shed we had extemporized for him, but he didn't. He was there on business. and he attend ed to it promp)tly. The chain broke like a piece of t wine and-I broke for the bal cony, which I just muanaged to reach from the cart. Of course there was a rack-et, and I got into the window, and by the time we l:ad armed ourselves with antique swords and a revolutionary mus ket the noise had subsided sufficiently for us to venture forth. It will contain some Revolutionary anecdotes and scraps of history, not nsually published in the histories of the State, or of the United States. It will tell of Emily Geiger and her peril ous ride. It will contain sketches of different sections of the county, of-the schools, of the celebrated Mount Bethel Academy, of the religious denomina tions, of benevolent societies, of Miss Galloway and her nmission to Egypt, of changes in business and business firms, of descendants of famniles who long ago left this county. It will contain some account of War Times in Newberry during the late war between tile States. Nor is the literature of the country forgotten, but specimnens of that will be give.n; the history of the newspapers will be related. Some account of the old times, as seen through the eyes of old men, wvill be given. It has been the aim of the compiler to make a book, valuable not only for the prsn timie, but for generations to come-a standardl work of reference in the history of Newberry Counity.
