Remarkable Longevity. Dr. P. B. RufT who now resides in ewberry has reached the remarkable Lge of 89 years. Capt. Jas. Gauntt who lied in New berry a short time ago was ibout the same. Mr. Abrawa Moore vho died at his house near Prosperity bout a year ago was we believe about 4) or $3) years old. Another old citizen vho died this year was Capt. 1athew iall, and there are others that we lo not recall just now. Dr. Ruff was 6etive'y engaged in the practice )f nedicine in Newberry for more than ialf a century. His health now is corn maratively good. From J udge O'Neali's minals of Newberry we learn that Iaximilliam Havie, the grand father f Dr. Ruff, who eaVe to Newberrv rom Virginia lived to be !:; years 0l4i. fe brought with him from Virgluia ive slaves four of whom also lived to he age of 93 years. Mr. Haynie took to medicine and was rarely sick. udge O'Neall says that Mr. Hayne n the latter part of his life became a elebrated mathematician. He was ixty years old when lie began the tudy. He mastered arithmetic and urned his attention to astronomy. He )atiently studied until lie was able to vork out the eclipses of 'the sun and uoon,'which he did to the.20th Ce urv. These calculations were earried o Georgia by his son-in-law Thoias tutherford and lost. He studied with ut the aid of lamp or candle but by he light of the dry heart pine. The aict of his calculations being lost Judge )'Neall says is to be deeply regretted oth on account of the information hey might convey and also the proof hey would furnish of how much pa ient, toiling, industry could accom lish. He died in 1812. He had only one on who died young. Merchants' Meeting. The Committee that went to Charles on to look after freight rates returned ist Wednesday. Another ineeting of he merchants was held on Thursday ight to hear their report and take such ction as might be deemed expedient. The meeting was not very largely at endecl. The Committe submitted their eport which was to the effect that they iad been cordially received by the rail, oad authorities and the citizens of :harleston, generally, and they seemed o be of the opinion that their visit vould result in good to Newberry and n a reduction in the present rate of reight, although they had nothing lefinite to report. The report was re eived as information and the commit ee continued. It was resoived as the sense of the neeting that the merchants ought to nter the cotton market and buy as a >rotectiou to their customers, and to reate a little more competition in the narket. SeVeral merchants present eemed to be willing to undertake the natter, and we learn that some of them iave been buying. Another meeting will be held to light at Council Chambers. The busi less men seem determined that New >erry shall be made as good a cotton narket as any in this section if not >etter. ~ That is business. Our mer hauts must bestir themselves and do omething besides meet and pass reso utious, however, if the town is to keel) >ace from a business stand-point. Ac ions beat resolutions in a thing of this :ind. There would be far less complaint gainst the whiskey business if people dho drin would demand a fine whis :ey, of a standard brand, and accept o other. There are many straiglftand tell matured whiskies on the market, ut no other stands so high with the tedical fraternity, and with con nois surs, as the celebrated I. W. HARrETt YHISKEY, of. Nelson County, Ken acky. The genuine T. WV. HARPER is sold nly by THOS. Q. BOOZER, , New berry, S. C. The Change not to be Made. It had been reported for some time Iat the train now run on the Green ille and Columbia Railroad between 'rosperity and Anderson would on or bout the first of October be extended ud run to Columbia and Seneca. It Snow reported that this was all news raper talk and that the railroad oli iais know nothing of it. The rail nad officials say that the train as now un does not pay e.-penses. It was toped that the traia would run from jolumbia to Seneca and that it would e made a mail train. It seems to us hat it would not cost the railroad iu~ch more and certainly would be aore profitable and a great convenien:-e o the travelling public. We would be glad to see the change ade and have the train made a hrough train. Nowv is Columbia's opportunity to lestir herself and induce the railroad ficials to run the train through. It rould be a great conveniebce to Col Embia especially. Newberry College. The fall session of Newberry College >egan yesterday morning. In the family was a little girl. She, like her mother, did not care particularly about making the trip. She was saying her evening prayers at her mother's knaee the night befdre her departure. After finishing those she had been taught, shed surprised her mother by adding with paculiar empihhasis, "Now, dood bye, D)od, to-miorrow we are doing to Sleey Hollow." The pathos of this leave-taking would have lost its import if that family had brought with it a suppmly of Dr. West moreland's Calisaya 'Tonic. As an anti periodic and stimulant, and as an eradicator of ma tartia& poison anad safe guard against its inroads, it is the medi cine of the age.
