A novel sight is presented in the Congressional canvass now progress tug in the Third South Corolina Dis. trict. Judge James 8. Cothran, of the Circuit Court, is a candidate fot the nomination, while he retains and exercises the ofice of Judge. A nomination by the primary plar has been ordered, and the candidatet are invited and expected to presenl their views on leading public issues Judge Cothran, then, occupies i two fold attitude to the public. IIe sitt as a Judge on the bench administer ing justice to his constituents, anl lt stands at the bar of public opiniol soliciting the suffrages of the satne constituents. The friends of Judge Cothran n. doubt claim that he is not an oflice seeker, and is therefore under no ob ligation to resign the judgeship until the office of Representative in Con gress is thrust upon him. That is not the fact. Judge (oth ran has been announced for weeks ii his county press as a candidate; hat is going before the people now to bc voted for in preference to other Mer as a candidate; he sai- under hi own hand that lie will' acep,t thc office of Representative. Here are all the constituent ele mnents of candidacy. Now if Judge Cothran is human. there must foilowc all the evils and temptations incident to candidacy for high ofiice, and whal they are every man knows who lives in a Republic. They will not bc enumerated here. It is sufilcient t say that no man can at the samt time administer the delicate tunc tions of a J udge's office and solicil the popular vote. We make no war on Judge Coth ran; he is an admirable man W do not propose to interfere with thi election of a Congressman in thi Third District; but the precedei he'etofore established in t'"is State of separating absolutely the politica from the judicial office, and which ha done so much to elevate the bench dlemnands that there shall be no re versal now. This demand looks be yond the present, and aims to sav< the State from the impllosition of sonull man1 not so worthy as Judge Cothram t' lie either Judge or Representa Li ve.-Chester Reporter, Sept. 17th. is Wilshesq are Blehinid It We are glad to know of the posi Lion and conduct of Judge Cothran as told by the Abbeville Messenger Trhe absence from active participam tion in the canvass is a tribute ofl'eret to. property and evidence enough, wv thiink, that .Judge Cothran under stands as well as we do tihe harm hi: candidacy may cause and the dain gerous precedent it gives. It is cred itable to him and in acCord with hi record and character that lhe shoukt do what hie can to avoid tile barn ndt prevent the danger. We do not sulpose that ainy bod(1 ~caimis that .Judge Cothran is callet to go to Congress by a spontaneomi 4iprihinhg of the plel, to deal witi -.an emergoncy or to fill a deficienca .of fit men in the district. Suie: things are rare In politics. There i no need for him to go to Washingto: to protect or help public interests A cainvaiss ini his behalf has been anm is being made ana his iVishes nre lie hind it. People (do not move o their own accord to rid theinselve of so good a judge and send himun t Congress. While-Judge Cothranii with proper dignity refraining from: the details of camnpaign work, lie i nevertheless a candlidatte and subjec to all tile objections we have hereto fore stated. T.Lhe News is maintaining a some what abstract, although elearly de fined principle against a man o great and deserved popularity Judge Cothran is a p)et of the people man with whom everybody falls i: ye and( who is relieved fronm the ap tion of hard rules just as mci Ily shirinkc from holding a rc dy attractive woman to thi Ines assigned her plainer sis Te frankly confess that w< little hope that lhe wvill bl ut we believe lie ought t< though we have as muci 'body for his chlaracter ents.
