.,WST, EDIT0~ ttto Normal Institute con. at Columbia, commences July nd continues four weeks, and on 8th the State Association con a in the same city. We con aid Mr. Coward highly for making ch a wise selection of instructors. The faculty urges upon the teachers to attend, from the fact that if they do not, the probability is the oppor tunity will be cut off after this year. I would urge upon the teachers to attend, for without the new methods and better ideas we are behind the times. One great thing we need is for mnen and w.omen to adapt them selves to the new order of things. It is too often manifest in our county teachers' association, that the larger number of our teachers care nothing about receiving or trying to impart tiny new ideas. They seem to think, "well I am in the country, and the old method will do as well as the new, the people out here won't know any better." The sooner such teach ers are out of the school room the better it will be for the children, pa rents, State and themselves, for they are betraying their trust. It would be better for our ex teachers' spokes man to oil'er twenty-four hours to such to leave the county. Our pro. fessional teachers are but few. Any one who can get a certificate can keep a school, but not any one who can get a certificate can teach a school. Teaching is a professional work, and those who teach should study it. The doctor is not admitted to practice until he ias studied the profession. The lawyer not admitted to the bar until he studies the profession. But the school keeper araduates in the same class with the one who aims to be a doctor or a lawyer. The doctor or lawyer must study up in other things before he is allowed to go into his desired field, but the school keep or goes out at once to keeping school, and calls himself a school teacher. Others go out and say, I am teaching, but as soon as any thing else turns up I am going to take hold of it, for that is just what I am waiting for. Some States only want those for teachers in the common schools who are graduates from normal schools. Already are the examination papers asking you about attending some normal institute; you may answer none. But ere long the time will come, when the words of Cromwell will be given to those who attend none : "get you gone, and give room to other men;"-not twenty-four hours to leave in. but at once. Some of the teachers were saying they be lieved Newberry could support the institute. If they think so, and want it, they can have it to come. The only thing needed is to go down and represent your county in a large num ber. The State has asked for each county to meet some tine previous to the 6th of July to imlpress each other with the idea of attendinlg the institute. As our president is likely to be away soon, and the vice has gone, I thought it well to0 urge upon each teaichier of' the counity' to meCet at our regulair mleeti ng place oin thle firot Sat.nrday inl .July, (3rdi) ait 10 o'clock a. mI.
