Only an hour's debatte, but of ex tra fervid character, .preceded the senate vote today. Prohibition advo cates and opponents clashed sharply during the final discussion, limited by agreement. A productive area of 212 square niles, or approxinatoly 135,000 acres in a solid block, located in Union, Duachita and Morehouse parishes, near the city of Monroe, and designated as the Monroe gas field, Is outlined in the report of the engineers. Although over 90,000,000,000 cubic feet of gas has been removed since the "discovery well" wad drilled in 1916, the engineers estimate the total amount of gas remaining In the re servoir at approximately 4,750,000,000,-I 000 cubic feet, with indications that the volume is much greater because the lins of 'the ileid had not been finally determined at the time their investigation 'was condluded. Washington, Nov. 20.-e4xperts of the -bureau of mines confirmed tonight the dispatch from Now Orleans de scribing the results of the investiga ition made by operatives of the bu reau into the new gas 'field. Chicago, Nov. 18.-Employes of Ar nour & Company, 26,000 in all, today hrough their plant governing coin nittee, agreed with olliclais of the )acking house that a wage reduction 4 necessary and fixed its amount. The mut is effective November 28. This is ,he first time in the history of the in-I lustry that a wage reduction has been irrived at in such a manner. Emlployes of Swift & Company, Wil ion & Comipany, and the 'Cudahy Pack ing Company, who are holding plant confercnces, are expected to accept ilmilar reductions, and Morris & Coin pany has announced that it will follow the example of the others. All of the Big Five except Morris & Company last spring inaugurated the "plant con 'ress" systen of employes participa tion in the management of the indus try. The agreement betiween Armour & Company and its employes followed a two-day conference. Twenty-four em ployes, representativo of the plant councils in nine cities, met with an equal number of company officials.
