Old Man Barleycorn is making a big light for existence In this country, but the game is lost. The legal sale of whiskey in this country is a thing of the l,ast, t e We beli'We that the regular meeting of the Chamber of Commerce Is due next Monday night. Why not have a big meeting and make a decision on the street and other improvements under consideration several months ago? e v I: ilro. Quill(: uip here at Fountain Inn Is spreading out. Not content with dishing out his weekly dope to his fellow townsmen and rural neigh bors, ie has signed up in the big league. Last week he had a page all to himself in the Saturday Evening Post. making about as good reading as there was in the paper and, at that, not as gool as some stuff he writes for purely local consumption. We are glad that the Post now has an Index so we can tind Iro. Quillen's page without mue (ch trouble " 0 0 Anyone "ho has traveled over the nlowly impooved roads of the county and then turned off on the unimprov ed roads is able to appreciate the vast convenience and advantage of the new as compared to the old The saving in time, in wear and tear on vehicles, not to mention the increased pleasure from riding, make a pleasing as well as economical relief from the old or der. The county will not be content with the advantages afforded by such a small proportion of its roads and the future will see a further expan sion of the ood road> idea. The dele gation to the Legislature could well give the cause another boost by pro viding for still more im proveneits than those now contemplated. SWVAM Po)! ' :/ ' TREATY STRUGGLE TO START AGAIN Growing Indications for Renewal this Week. Washington. Jan, 4.-There were growing indications tonight that the senate's struggle to dispose of the peace treaty would be renewed during the coming week, with an increased determination of those who want rati fication. Senators returning from holiday trips to their home states made sever al new suggestions to the compromise proposals of those who had remained here during lie recess to -work on a concilation )rog'iram. As a result, tho compromise negotiations seemed like ly to take a wide scope and although no one could pr"diot. ertalnly the re sult, a reopening of the whole subject in private and party conference and on the senate oflor apparently was assured. Senator Hitchcock, the Democratic leader, and Republican senators of the reservation group were confident that their recent !iscussons had laid the basis for a settlement although no definite announceimelt has been made. Two compronise plans bid fair to develop miuc[ discussicn during the weel:. One w:s p)rol)osed by Senator Underwood who intro(duccd a resolu tion just before congrl"ss recessed on December 20 iirovidin for appoilnt mni('t of a cone hllation committee of ten senators to work out a basis for ratification. S.'nator Underwood is not expected to return to Washington un til 'Tuesday, and whetler he -will ask for immediate action on the measure is uncertain. Tile mild reservation Re publicans and many )emocrats have said they would supi)o"t it but some of the leaders think suc'h a formal move un necessary. The other suggestion widely talked of ton ight w as a geleral conference of D .n 'ecrat; and lleimblicans who want e( to S1' the treaty ratilled. 'T'hose backing the l!an emplhasied that tl' bi-parti:;an ch aracter of su:cht a gath( r i:g Iight eli:nate mal:ny of the minor em1barrassnients of t!' situation and lead to anll ai'reel(n'llt oiI a reservation prog;ram bellin d wlich the Haeessarys two-thirds could be mIuteredt.
