Anyone "ho has traveled over the

and then turned off on the unimprov
ed roads is able to appreciate the vast
convenience and advantage of the new
as compared to the old The saving in
time, in wear and tear on vehicles,
not to mention the increased pleasure
from riding, make a pleasing as well
as economical relief from the old or
der. The county will not be content
with the advantages afforded by such
a small proportion of its roads and
the future will see a further expan
sion of the ood road> idea. The dele
gation to the Legislature could well
give the cause another boost by pro
viding for still more im proveneits
than those now contemplated.

TREATY STRUGGLE
TO START AGAIN
Growing Indications for Renewal
this Week.
Washington. Jan, 4.-There were
growing indications tonight that the
senate's struggle to dispose of the
peace treaty would be renewed during
the coming week, with an increased
determination of those who want rati
fication.
Senators returning from holiday
trips to their home states made sever
al new suggestions to the compromise
proposals of those who had remained
here during lie recess to -work on a
concilation )rog'iram. As a result, tho
compromise negotiations seemed like
ly to take a wide scope and although
no one could pr"diot. ertalnly the re
sult, a reopening of the whole subject
in private and party conference and
on the senate oflor apparently was
assured.
Senator Hitchcock, the Democratic
leader, and Republican senators of the
reservation group were confident that
their recent !iscussons had laid the
basis for a settlement although no
definite announceimelt has been made.
Two compronise plans bid fair to
develop miuc[ discussicn during the
weel:. One w:s p)rol)osed by Senator
Underwood who intro(duccd a resolu
tion just before congrl"ss recessed on
December 20 iirovidin for appoilnt

ten senators to work out a basis for
