AND A PROPHECY We feel good over the campaign we have waged these two months in these columns for safe and sane farming for Laurens county. It has ever been good doctrine to preach; it was, when we engaged this half page, of vital importance; it is now, as we think all can see; a matter of equal importance to the manning and equipping of the army and navy. In the words of Assistant Secretary of Agriculture Vrooman: "The country needs skill, nerve and brains in the furrows right now as much as she needs them in the trenches." We have faithfully tried here to show the farmers the need of making our farms self-sustaining this year. We believe that plenty of corn, meat, peas, syrup, milk, butter, potatoes (sweet and Irish), tomatoes, beans, peanuts, cabbage, etc.. will make us independ ent of food conditions and food prices this fall and winter, be our country at peace or war. We believe that a farmer in debt this fall who can show plenty of these to live on another year will have no trouble in getting credit extended. We believe that the best assurance a farmer can give next year of being worthy of credit is that he has Made a. Living at Home This Year. V be ievl -at the man, in couity or town who fads to sec th. the biggest question confronting us itn X.A te qstron of making our own meat am bread this yeAr, is Very F6olish and Shortsighted. We donr't know how to put t plainer. ver-y dekpat meif of the government, fnrm- the 1 Presiden: m: dowh, all branches of business, all our State officers aA alI sensible and patriotic business men are urging this course on all our people this ~.spring. We A re Very Foolish Not to Listen If prices will warn us look over these, wholesale, in yesterday's papers. It may not be a question of prices in three more months. Wheat $2.85 per bushel Corn $1.85 per bushel Oats .92 per bushel Meal 1.75 per bushel Flour $12.55 per barrel And they reach new high records every day. These figures~furnish ample warning for a thinking man. We haive promised to help anybody we can. We still promise. But we assure you of the fact that we won't be able to render much help unless Laurens County will make her own Bread and Beans, Hog and Hominy this year.
