Washington, March 11.?Senator Henj.R. Tillman of .South Carolina to day evinced his displeasure at the persistency or hundreds of office seekers who have Hocked to the cap ital since the inauguration With characteristic vigor the senator con demned the scramble for jobs. He said the situation reminded him of a Bible text "1 have forgotten just where in the Holy Writ 1 read it," he said, "but it fits the case exactly and runs something as follows: 'The wild asses of the desert are athlrst and hungry. They have broken into the green corn.' " The senator recalled that the text contained a reference to the "wild asses" trampling down the corn, but he said he would leave that out. He added that he had full faith in Presi dent Wilson as a "herdsman, who would keep the wild beasts from doing any damage." Resolutions of Respect. Whereas, Almighty God saw fit to take from us our highly esteemed friend and greatly beloved brother, John Alvin Whiteford; Our late broth er was an honored member of Bath albara church and he ever manifested the warmest interest in Its prosperity. He 'was amiable and pleasing in his manner and consistent in his Chris tian deportment. But he is gone?no more will he be seen In our midst?no more will be participate in our deliberations. In lifo we loved him* und In death it is but natural that we should mourn for him. Therefore, he it resolved; 1st. That In the death of our friend i .Johnnie, one of our most worthy and devoted members, our church has ex perienced a real heavy loss. While we deeply mourn his loss, yet we would not bo unmindful of the fact that this dispensation wals ordained by that Being without whose knowledge "not even a sparrow fallcth to the ground." Though we can not understand why t is that the omnipotent Creator has taken one so useful, yet we know that our loss Is his gain and we hope he is now sweetly resting beyond the silent river. 2nd. Laurens Mills, March 17.?After a tremendous downpour of rain for about three days, the people are glad to got out again and enjoy the sunshine even though the weather is real eold. After several days suffering, the 111 tlo babe of Mr. and Mrs. Ford Bram lett passed away on Sunday night. March 9th, and was buried at the city cemetery Monday following. Mrs. Willie Walker, who has been sick for some time, 8 better now. Eddie Wade is uot Improving much, he has been sick for two years, nnd his many friends would be so glad to see him well again. He was such a help to his church and Sunday school, always willing to do all he could In ev ery way. Little Clara Franks is gradually get ring well again after a long spell of sickness. She has been sick since last October. Mr. J. T. Sumerel has sold his homo on Mills street and most of his house hold effects, and Is going to Anderson for a few months to visit among friends and relatives. Willie Sumerel has given up mill work on account of his health. Rev. L, S. Shealy and wife have re turned from a very pleasant trip to Atlanta where they have attended the bible conference. They report a good time, but did not enjoy the storm quite so well. Little Kate Madden, of Maddens, S. C? visited her cousin, Mary Martin, on last Saturday. The choir at the second Baptist j Church will meet every Tuesday night to practice. All who will take a part in singing are cordially Invited to at tend these meetings. After having said some good things about our mill overseers and pastors, we shall not forget to mention our very efficient set of men at the ofllce and store. Mr. M. L. Smith with Mr. I C. M.
