Atken, Feb. 3.?Firo broaklug out in the Hotel Park-ln-tho-Plnes here this morning at 11 o'clock, burned the magnificent and palatial winter tour ist hostelry to tho ground, producing one of the most spectacular, awotn aplrlng and destructive conflagrations in the annals of this famous little win ter resort, and entailing an enormous loss that will mount into hundreds of thousands of dollars.. . The collossal structure, In view of Its material and the peculiar architec tural arrangement of the building, was doomed from the first. The blaze started In. a thousand feet of fresh pine lumber stored in the basement near the elevator shaft, and with Inconceiv able repldlty the lurid tongues of flame swopt the entire basement and filled every room and Icorridor in !-:-. the hotol with Impenetrable stifling > black aniokc, rendering It Impossible I for the firemen to gain access'to the flames. Flames Spread Rapidly. In a very few minutes after the alarm was registered the Are had swept the basement, burst tlhrough on tor the entire building with a lower ing roar and the entire structure was In flames. A stiff wind was blowing to the west and this. whipped and swept the flames into fury, whistling like a cycMne. Finally the building fell in with1 a'tremendous crash and roar, sending the flaming embers In every direction. Two (hours after the alarm was first, sent In, the Hotel Park-in-the-Plnes, was a mass of dobrls. The building was the property pf the MaoArthurs, of Michigan,' rfnd was -1 insured for $140,000, with 40,000 insurance on the furnishings. The loss to the hotel company was more than a quarter of a million. Personal Losses Hen>j. Practically nothing was saved from the burning building. The fortyfour guests stopping at the hotel lost per sonal effects to the approximate sum of $22,000, and $3,000 would hardly cover the los? sustained by the large corps of servants. Col. A. Dick, the manager, who Is a New York man, last about $30,000. J. G. Macksoud & Brothers, of New York, lost $10,000 worth of expensive costumes, labes and embroldoiies Im ported from Prance. Bo the total per sonal losses amount to something over $75,000, this added to the value of the building, runs the total destruction up to decidedly more than $300,000. As a matter of fact, little effort was made to save property, most of the energy being directed to the end that the guests, and servants might be saved from death.
