Smith, who was badly bruised and hurt in a runaway accident at Mr. Pleasant church ten days ago, is rap Idly recovery. Mr. W. P. Qarrett, who was reared in this county and who spent a num ber of years in the city, was here Monday shaking hands with bis old friends. Until recently he was with the Florida College of Commerce, of Ocala, Fla., but now he has accepted a position as head of the commerce department in the Davis-Wagner Bus iness college, at Norfolk, Va., and will take up his work there the first of the year. P. Minter entertained the Social Club in a delightful manner Friday afternoon, when nine tables were prepared for Forty Two. The house was beautifully decorated in Christmas bells and holly, producing a very striking holiday effect. After a number of games were played a de licious sweet course was served, ooo Coats-Madden. A marriage of interest to a wide circle of friends all over the county, wa solemnized at Friendship church Sunday evening, when Miss Bessie Madden became the wife of Mr. .1. P. ('oats. The marriage was witnessed by a large number of friends and relative of th(> young people and was very beautifully performed. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S. D. Madden and is a talented young lady of charming manner and beautiful disposition. Mr. Coats Is principal of the Trlnlty-TtidgO school and is con sidered one; of the most progressive teachers of tho county. After the wedding ceremony they left for Cross Hill, to spend the honeymoon at the home of the groom's parents. After the holidays, they will return to Trin ity Hidge, where Mr. Coats will take up his work. The congratulations of numerous friends go out to the young people. ooo A Bare Treat. It was a joy and an education to be the guest of Mrs. W. E. Lucas at her beautiful home at W?>tts Mills and nt ? ? d her musical on Tuesday evening, Dec. 17th. The program was devoted to McDowell. Mrs. Lucas was ably assisted by Mrs. Devereaux Turner, of Spartanburg, and Miss Emmie Meng of Laurens. Miss Meng read poetic selections from "Edward McDowell, his works and ideals", by Elizabeth Fry Page, illuminating the motif of the composer. Music lovers of Lau rens have no need of an introduction to Mrs. Turner. She has a pleasing personality, deep culture, thorough musical education. With a rich, deep, flexible contralto voice, wide in range, full of strength and Infinite sweetness. Her phrasing Is delightful, easy, na tural and impressive. Mrs. Turner is an artist and Laurens students or voice are fortunate to have a woman of such pronounced genius to train them. The writer has beard many pianists but there are none better In the mus ical world than our own Mrs. Lucas. She has a faultless teehinque. Her touch has tho virile strength of a man's, and the tenderness of a wo man. She has the rare gift of a Hue imagination that enables her to put herself in the place nnd in the spirit of the composer and with directness and skill second only to inspiration convey the composer's message to the hearts of her audience, la it a "Wild Hose" you inhnlc Its fragrance. The Georgia attorney general said he came all the way to Washington to make a complete reply on the part of the decent people of the South to the "insults of Governor Please." He declared that the South did not Stand for lynch law and that the peo ple of the country ought to know It. "For an olllcer of tho law occupying the chief executive chair of a great state, to counsel lawlessness in a high forum of debate at a time when the eyes of a nation are fixed upon him, constitutes an offense against the majesty of the law, the gravity of which is without, parallel or preced ent." .Mr. Folder said. "If the chief executive of a state, when the need arises, fails to call out the militia, he becomes an anarchist." Approved by Members.
