Clinton, Dec. 10.?YoHterday, De cember 9 was the 100th anniversary of the birth of the first Rev. Doctor James Henley Thornwell. after whom the Thornwell Orphnnago was named and the 40th annlvorsary of the or ganization of the board of visitors of that institution. It was observed with appropriate exercises at the orphan age. On Sunday afternoon In the Thornwell Memorial church the Rev. T. H. Law of Spartanbnrg, delivered a most able address on "Thornwell, the Preacher." Yesterday morning at half past ten memorial exercises were held In the church when Dr. Jacobs gave a brief account of the naming of the orphanage and the connection of the Thornwell family with it. Dr. Law again spoke to the pupils of the orphanage on the "Boyhood of Thorn woll" and urged them to Imitate his nobility of character under circum stances much like their own. The Rev. Mr. Smith spoke to the pupils of their debt of love to Dr. Thornwell's great pupil, Dr. Jacobs, and spoke of his life as an Illustration of the value of high Ideals. Meeting at First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. John W. Smith, evangelist for tho S. C. Synod conducted a sc ries of evangelistic services in tho First Presbyterian church the past week. Great Interest was taken In these services and it Is believed that much good was accomplished In quick ening the Interest of the church mem bers as well as securing new mem -I . bers. Mason-Chandler Wedding;. Last Monday evening MIbb Loreo Mason and Mr. j. A. Chandler were married at the Presbyterian manBe by the Rev. F. D. JoneB, their pastor. The ceremony was witnessed by a small gathering of Intimate friends. Mr. and Mrs. Chandler are both very popular and have been widely congratulated on their happiness. Several dinners and teas have been given in their honor. They are for tho present at home with Mrs. Chandler's parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Mnson. The Rev. J. E. Mahaffey Leaves. The Rev. J. E. Mahaffey having been stationed here for four years was according to the rule of the Methodist church transferred this year to anoth er field. He and hit family have made many warm friends In Clinton who part with them most reluctantly. Mr. Mahaffey has Impressed himself on the community as an orator and on Memorial Day, Lee's birthday, and similar occasions, gave the veterans here great pleasure. Mr. Mahaffey goes from here to Batesburg, leaving on Thursday. He will be succeeded here by the Rev. Mr. Cantey who for the past four years has been at Batesburg. Mrs. S. A. Fhllson III. Mrs. S. A. Phllson has been criti cally 111 during the past week but her condlt'on Is reported as greatly Im proved now and her speedy recovery Is expected. Her children were sum moned to her last week. Dr. E. H. dm in In the Hospital. Dr. E. B. Oarvln was carried by Dr. Davis to the Columbia hospital Monday He was desperately ill on Sunday but It Is hoped that his condition will respond to surgical treatment. Social Affairs. Brides are the center of Interest In Clinton recently. Mrs. J. W. Cope land's elegant reception in honor of Miss Marion McCrary and Mr. W. G. Taylor was one of the most beautiful affairs ever given In Clinton. To night Mrs. A. G. Galloway will give a lovely reception in honor of her son and his bride, Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Chandler. Mrs. Galloway's cordial hospitality in the past Is a guaran tee of the pleasure the guests will enjoy. Tomorrow Mrs. J. T. Robert Bon will give a large reception from 3 to 6 In honor of her Bon's bride, Mrs. T, O. Robertson, who has already in the few days she has been in Clin ton, been the recipient of many atten tions, and who has won for herself a place among the friends of her hus band. Among those who have entertained for Mr. and Mrs. T. G. Robertson was Mrs. Julia GrlHln who Invited several couples to a beautiful dinner In their honor. Mr. and Mrs. W. Bailey Owons en tertained for Mr. and Mrs. Chandler and Mr. and Mrs. Robertson. Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Adalr entertain ed at a dinner for their brother and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Adalr. The social meeting of several book clubs were held last week. Mrs. W. H. Shands was hostess to the Friend, ly Dozen, Mrs. R. A. Vance to the Actaeon. PcrsonnI Items. Clinton sent a large delegation to the IT. D. C. convention In Charleston last week. Mrs. W. B. Owens had the honor of serving the convention as recording secretary pro tern, in addi tion to her regalar office as corres ponding secretary. Miss Fronde Kennedy made the response to the ad dresses of welcome from the Charles ton organization. Mrs. J. I. Cope land presented the report from Steph en D. Lee chapter and was chairman of the committee on resolutions. Mrs. T. D. Copeland was appointed one of the tellers; so that Stephen D. Lee chapter was given more than Its share of honors. The ladles from Clinton enjoyed their stay In Charleston thor oughly and returned with renewed zeal and enthusiasm for their work. Several Cllntonlans wore recently visitors In Columbia; among them: Mr. W. M. McMllan, Mss SaRle Bell McMillan and Mrs. Albert Galloway. Miss Fronde Kennedy spent Friday and Saturday in Columbia with Mr. D. K. McDuflle's family. Mr. and Mrs. H. Bailey Owens spent Friday and Saturday in Columbia with Mrs. W, S. Werts.
