EX-PRESIDENTS TO GET PENSIONS Carnegie Corporation Will .Make Pro? vision?Would Enable Former Fx ecutlves to Devote Unique Knowl edge of Public Affairs to Public Good. New York, Nov. 21.?Future ex presldents of the United Stutes are to be pensioned In the sum of $25,000 each annually, by action of the Car negie corporation of New York today. The grant is provided with the idea of enabling former executives to devote their unique knowledge gained in pub lic affairs to the public good, free from pecuniary care. A similar amount is to be paid widows of ex presldents as long as they remain un married. The pensions are to be promptly of fered to the ex-presidents or their widows, so that no application will be required from them. Payment Is ,*o be continued so long as the re cipients "remain unprovided for by the government." The announcement followed the sec ond annual meeting of the corpora tion, held at the residence of Andrew Carnegie h?re and \attended by the corporation's eight trustees. The trustees announced that a total of $125.000,000 In securities had thus Afar been transferred to the corpora ^tion, which will carry on the various works in which Mr. Carnegie has been engaged, and sue hothers as he may from time to time think it advisable to establish. Nov. 24.?The bond issue for $1,000,000 to relieve the con gested conditions at the State Hospital for the Insane was defeated in the gen eral election because the proposition did not receive the indorsement of two thirds of the qualified electors partici pating in the election. Nov. 25.-?We recently had the pleasure of meeting Messrs Mon roe and Redden of Honea rath. Mr. and Mrs. Monroe Howies of Coronaca and Dr. Lee of Greenwood. Mr. Henry Simmons bf Gray Court was here recently delivery ing fruit trees. Mr. C. L. Smith of Abbeville, spent last week with Messrs. .J. A. and W. II. Hill. We regretted to see our good friends, Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Pu+.nam move to Clinton last week. Mr. W. S. Knight visited Greenville last week. Mr. and Mrs. John Sadler of Hodges, were visiting relatives here last week. Drs. Jones. Workman and Jones are quite busy practicing and collecting. Mrs. Win. Henry Moore has return ed from a visit to her daughter in Kansas City. Miss Lilla Jones is In charge of a school near Cowpens. We are very sorry to hear of the death of Miss Clara Hasor of Donalds. She was a daughter of our lamented friend, Mr. John Hasor. Miss Clara was loved by all of her acquaintances and we tenderly sympathize with the bereaved family. Miss Olivia Jones left Saturday to take charge of a school in Lautens county. A cordial welcome awaits those who may rent, lease or purchase homes in our midst. Our school is progressing nicely and we hope the pupils will attend regularly. All of our people sympathize with Mr. .1. ('. Gambrell in the recent loss of her sister, Mrs. Davis of Augusta. It was our good fortune to attend tlte District Meeting of Physicians in Greenwood last Thursday. Dr. Neuffer of Abbeville, president of the associa tion, deserves great credit for tin? splendid program. The attendance was large, the papers were splendid, the banquet was served in grad stylo and all enjoyed the delightful occa sion. We are indebted to Dr. Workman for recent courtesies. Ware Shoals continues to pay the highest price for cotton. We are indebted to our faithful and efhclont county commissioner, Mr. G. B. Rilcy, for keeping our roads and bridges in such good condition.
