r Question FLEMING BROTHERS Laurens, S. C. Gentlemen:? Kindly advise me as to whose initial, the groom's or the bride's, should be engraved on a gift of silver table ware. Answer Laurcns, S. C, Oct. 28, 1912. Dear Madam:? Your inquiry regarding the cor rect engraving for wedding silver has just been received. There is no set rule, and authorities differ as to which is correct. It is argued by some that wedding presents are gifts to the bride and not to the groom, but it is the opin ion of the majority that the groom's initials should mark the gift?for why should the silver that ?he will use in common with her husband all her life bear the initial of a namo that is no longer hers? ?in fact, probably many of her guests would not be familiar with her former name. This latter custom prevails in the fashion centres of Europe and America, nnd has generally been re cognized by us as the correct form, except, of course, where the gift partakes of a strictly personal na ture, such us Toilet Articles, Jewel Cases, Photo Frames, etc., when the bride's initial is permissible. Thanking you for this opportunity of serving you, we remain Yours very truly, FLEMING BROTHERS JEWELERS THE VERY BEST LAUNDRESS seldom makes a success of it when it comes to handling men's shirts, collars and cuffs. Always RelliMe SOLO BY DRUGGISTS FVERYWHfRF DEMOCRATS SURE TO CONTROL SENATE With un Equal Number of Republicans! und Demon ills and a Democratic Vice President, the Democrats are In Certain Control. Washington, Nov. 7.?Control of the senate In the sixty-third congress now is practically ussured to the demo crats. Conceding to the republicans the legislature of all states still in the doubtful column tonight, the democrats will have a vote of 4S, or one-half of the entire membership of the senate, with a democratic vice president in the chair to cast the de ciding ballot in case of a tie. Seven states are yet to be heard from defi nitely. A senator from any of tbese would give the democrats a clear majority and It is possible their strength will be even further increased by winning. Kansas Democratic. Kansas has been added to the dem ocratic column in the past 24 hours. The states In which the complexion of the legislatures is yet to be decid ed are Illinois, Michigan, New Hamp shire, Oregon, South Dakota, Tennes see, and Wyoming. Ordinarily Ten nessee could be relied upon to help the democratic party, but the faction al fight there may prevent in this crisis. In Illinois there are compli cations growing out of the multiplic ity of parties, rendering it uncertain ' whether there will be a senatorial election. In that state there should he chosen a successor to the deposed I Senator Lorlmer as well as to Senator Cullom, whose term expires on the fourth of next .March. If there should be no election the result I would be to favor the democrats by reducing the membership of the sen ate to 94, of which number the 48 al ready chosen would be G working ma jority. Ncv? Hampshire. In New Hampshire the dispatches indicate a possible combination of democrats and republicans and In thai eVOllt prediction as to the course of the man selected would be mere; guess work. Whatever the outcome in any of the states mentioned, there can be no doubt as to democratic control of the senate. In addition to the aid of the vice president in an emergency, they will ' find willing ro-operation among the ! progressive s enators. Three or four of the progressives are almost as lib eral in their tariff views and on other questions as the democrats themselvof. Sonntors Clapp, Ln Fol lelto. Cummins, Gronna, Bristow nnri Poindcxter are all avowed tariff re formers. They also favor advanced leg.station on oth< r .subjects. Sena tor Works announced bis intention of voting for the democratic presidential Candidate some time before the elec tion. Tnis determination was due. however, to a peculiar combination of circumstances and the California sen ator probably would not wish to have it construed as binding him to a dem ocratic legislative policy. He is class ed as a protectionist. Of 31 hold-over republicans, eight have been classed as progressives in the past. They are Senators Bristow, of Kansas; Crawford, of South Da kota, Cummins of Iowa; Gronna, of North Dakota, Clapp. of Minnesota: La Follett, of Wisconsin; Poindexter, of Washington, and Works, of Cali fornia. Mr. Norris has beon one of the leaders of the progressive ele ment in the house and will continue to co-operate with that element in the senate, as it Is expected that Sen ator Kenyon, of lown, will and possi bly Senator Borah, of Idaho, In such measures as may appeal to them. .Much interest Is manifested in the political affiliations of the progressive republicans. Heretofore, they have been content to be known as progres sive republicans. Whether any num ber of them will withdraw from the republican party Is a problem. Sena tor Bristow. Clapp and Poindexter are understood to have supported Mr. Roosevelt, and if they should decline to co-operate with the republicans of the sennte, the change would ma terially weaken the old party. - - A UNIQUE REt ORB Very Few Like It In Our Broad He public. Colonel Theodore Roosevelt made the following statement at Oyster Bay: "The American people by a great plurality, have decided in favor of Mr. Wilson and the Democratic party. Like all good citizens I accept the result with entire good humor and content ment. As for the Progressive caus^i I can only repeat what I have already so many times said, the fate of the leader for the time being is of little consequence, but the cause itself must in the end triumph, for its triumph is essential to the well being of the American people. "THEODORE ROOSEVELT." About the same time he issued his statement, Colonel Roosevelt sent the following telegram to Governor Wil son: "The American people by a great plurality have conferred upon you the highest honor in their gift.
