Columbia, Oct. 3.?Wade Hampton Gibbes. mayor of Columbia, today is sued a remarkable Statement to the public in which he states very plain ly that he is tired of unofficial crit icism. "Come on with your recall. Get up your petition. I am ready to justify the record or to retire for a better man." says Mayor Gibbes in his statement to the public. "Your mayor is tired of covert threats," says Mayor Gibbes In his statement, "Come out into the open. Ilefore condemning, will you not in vestigate? "A newspaper adviser privately said 'Pay no attention to unofficial and anonymous criticism,' and yet soon writes an editorial on 'information' without even viewing the records or appearing before council with a com plaint. "Unsigned newspaper criticism is beneath notice. "Public service in Columbia seems to be public opproblum. "Your friends expect wonders? your enemies expect to see miracles ?your newspapers criticise without ; knowledge?your poor Importune? your 'blind tigers' rage?your 'drug dispensers' make their clubs sell damnation on Sundays, while they rub their holy palms in charity and roll their twisted tongues around the audible syllables of "salvation'?your debauchees to pawnshops and loan offices bay the moon and heg for char ity, but refuse ever for reward to give evidence to convict.
