Things are brightening up. ? ? ? A rough r-.-.-.imate has been made of the cost of twenty five posts with lights upon them to go upon the ??treets and corners around the court house. It is thought that the cost for that many would be around 1900 in stalled * We are inclined to think that twenty five would hardly be need ed, since each post would have sev eral lights upon them, but certainly it would be fine to have as many as ^vill be really needed. Our public square would be a thing of beauty and something to be proud of If it were properly lighted. ? ? ? The Advertiser is not standing up for Mayor Grace. It does not know much about him. His campaign against Rhett was not to our taste nor were many other of his activities. But! It seems to us that the recent de velopments around tbe Charleston liquor graft situation are fairly con elusive evidence that Grace has not been on the graft side of the ring himself. If it were so that he had ber.n receiving graft from any single one of the whiskey dealers, he would have been too wise and cautious to bring the charges against Gov. Bluase. He would have known that alliances, made with such a class of people as are blind tigers and with no other friendship holding them together than that of selfish gain for boodle, are not binding and are liable to break on the least provocation or for slight monetary considerations. The Great and .Glorious Fourth of July will be fittingly celebrated this year, at Watts Mills with a couple of games of hilarious baseball. Both games will be played with Dray ton Mills of Spartanburg, which afore said team barely escaped alive In a two to one contest with Watts a cou ple of Saturdays ago. The ^ two are therefore pretty evenly matched and a battle royal is expected. The first game will be called In the morning at 10:30 and the second at 4.00 in the afternoon. The Watts aggregation laid it over the Enoree gang last Saturday with a ?core of 13 to 3. The locals pasted the sphere all over the garden, while the visitors were unable to make connection with the twisters and bend ers of Hill the home slabeter. Fisher as usual starred with the stick, slam ming out a homer, a triple, and Just two doubles in fire times up. Mr. Lavender Announces that Seme Fine Pictures are Scheduled for This Week. . The motion picture show Is contin uing as popular as ever. In spite of many counter attractions there has been a fine attendance. The show la running regularly every afternoon and during the chautauqua two fine pic tures will be shown each night after the scheduled attraction. These lat ter are free to those who attend the chautauqua. Manager Lavender announces as special feature reels the following: For today, Wednesday, "Bob's Micro scope" and for Thursday, "Pathe Weekly". Chief Crews and his Team of Firemen 1 are in Reek Hill Attending the An nnal Tournament. The Laurens fire department is represented at Rock Hill this week where the annual tournament and bus iness-meeting will be held. The com pany's big horse, Henry, and the light' wagon were shipped to Rock Hill se\> | \ eral days ago and the team followed ' yesterday. The Laurens boys are confident of taking down some of the prize money this time. I-ast year they made good runs as they did the year before, but some how or other ' they Just didn't go quite fast enough ' or even as fast as they had gone in ! practice. This year, however, some ( new faces are found in the lineup and it is hoped that this will change the "luck" and bring the team out vic torious. Amos Gilliam. Death of Good Citizen. Mr. A. M. Sease. an aged citizen of] this city, died at the home of his son in-law, Mr. Brooks 8wygert Saturday afternoon. Mr. Sease had been in de clining health for some days, due to his advanced age. His death, though not unexpected, was received with sor row by all who knew him. He was in the 78th year and had always lived a| consecrated upright life. The body was carried to his old home near Peake Sunday afternoon, where it was | Interred with Masonic honors. Sustained Painful Injuries. Mr. Harland E. Cartledge. an em ploye at the freight depot of the C. & W. C. and C. N. & L. railroad, met with a severe accident Monday after noon, resulting in two broken ribs | and other minor Injuries. Mr. Cart, ledge was attempting to go from the station platform Into one of the box cars, when the large steel plate used In crossing slipped and threw him head-foremost Into the door. He fell upon hla side upon the door sill, break ing the two bones, and at the samel time the large steel plate struck him 'n the back of the head. He was Im mediately carried by friends to the Gllkerson House, where he boards. He Is now getting along as well as j could be expected. The many friends j which he ha3 made since coming here some months ago hope for his early recovery. Mr. Cartledge formerly llv-| ed In Augusta. Preaching at Old Field. The con gregation is requested to bear the date In mind. >'egro Shooting Scrape. Almond Harris, a negro man, shot another negro by the name of Gary at Poplar Springs Baptist church Sun day. A Protest Bditor The Advertiser: I notice in your last week's paper that you say that city council is ar ranging to repair West Main street and South Harper street and as you have shown a spirit of "outspoken ness" and a disposition to help "fair play," I am writing as a citizen and taxpayer to ask you to publish my pro test against our city council further favoring the sections of our city re ferred to above until they have at least been just to some other sections as deserting of favor and in much greater need. On West Hampton street, where I live. It Is necessary that we Jump ditches and wade through mud when It rains In order to got to and from our residences. If our "city fathers" think this Is an overdrawn picture, let them, after the next rain, Inspect for themselves. But I advise they have Brother Henderson carry them on his road working machinery or they might find It necessary to call on him to use his splendid team of mules to pull them out of the mud and convey them back to the already well paved main streets. There are some sections of our town which have never had luatlce. Some time ago, when wo voted bonds to pave the side walks of our town, It was understood, after a survoy by a competent engineer, that we were raising enough money to pare tue walks of the tntlre town, but my own, . with other sections, have not been " touched, while Main street has been paved Its entire length on both sides.
