THE OREGON HOTEL DESTROYED BY FLAMES Famous Greenwood Hostelry Totally Destroyed wltb All Contents und Stores Underneath. Greenwood, March 3.?The Oregon hotel and Us block of stores hero wero totally destroyed by fire early Ibis morning. Where once stood the famous hotel Is now a mere smolder ing heap of burning debris with frag ments of ruined brick walls and use less chimneys standing upright In the midst. ' The fire represents a property loss of approximately $110,000, with per haps less than half that amount in insurance. The loss to the town is far greater than the figures would in dicate. The Oregon hotel has been one of the town's greatest features ever since its establishment, and to bo deprived of it is a very great loss indeed. Most fortunately no lives were lost. Origin is Unknown, The origin of the flro is unknown. It was discovered about 2 o'clock this morning. The fire alarm register shows that the fire alarm was turned at 2: ir> o'clock. A negro bellboy, Bert Lewis, was the first person awaro of flro. The smoke filling the downstairs corridor aroused him. He says he tried to use the emerg ency hose, but could not make any headway against the flames, and threw it down to arouse Mr. Brinson, the proprietor, and the guests. At that time the fire was in the store room from most of the known facts. The fire must have started either In Ihis room, which is just hack of the pool room, or in the rear of a press ing club just adjoining. The proprie tor, II. S. Brinson, Inclines to the opin ion that spontaneous combustion may account for the fire, certain materials in this room making it possible for the fire to gain headway very rapidly if such were the case. Some Narrow Kscnpes. Mr. Brinson says that his first thought was to awaken a lady, Mrs. Hewlett, of an advanced age and an aged couple, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas, both rather feeble. Those on the second floor were gotten out but lost all their efiects. Both Mrs. Hewlett and Mr. and Mrs. Thomas are from New Jersey, and have been spending the winter here. Meanwhile the work of arousing (he guests was go ing on, and some miraculous escapes were hud by those on the third doors. who failed to realize tho rapidity of the Ramos and the dangerous effect a of Immense clouds of smoke rolling through the entire building. G. Strauss of Atlanta, a well known traveling man. had the closest call of any. He was on the third floor, took time to dress completely, but when he went out into the corridor he was overcome by smoke. He did not know which way to turn to find air and an outlet. Rushing back into his room, he appeared at the window and screamed for help. -Max Arnold of Greenwood saw his plight, made his may up the fire escape Into the room and practically carried him out and brought 1dm down the escape to safety. Mr. Strauss says lie was helpless and ready to drop when he was brought out. He was in bed tills morning and very weak, but will be himself in -\ day or two. Quests Lose Clothing. P. P. Ueattie, a prominent young attorney of Greenville, escaped down a gutter but lost his clothing. Mr. Blaugh of Petersburg, Va., made a sensational jump but lost all his clothing and effects. Mr. and Mrs. Carpenter, on tho third floor, for tunately found a ladder near their room, one discarded by some painters and used this to get to the second floor, thus being brought down safe ly. They barely got out of their room before boing overcome with smoke. No lives wero lost, though all the guests lost their clothing and bag gage. It was a llerce Are from the start and swept over the building in a very short time. The merchants in the block lost all their stocks, practically little being saved. As near as can be approximated this morning tho losses are as fol lows: Oregon hotel and furniture cost $!br>,000; insurance, $".1,000; owned by Mrs. C. T. Rai ley. Ii. G. Brinson, private linen, fur niture stock, etc., $7,000; no insur ance. McKellar-Graham Furniture com pany, stock, $G,r>00; insurance $3,r,<i0. Holland Brothers, pianos, organs, etc.. $?,000; insurance, $3,200. Oregon pharmacy, B. L. Xorris, proprietor, stock and fixtures, $'2, 000; insurance. $."?.000. C. A. Latour, barber shop llxtu'rea valued $1,500; Insurance $r?<?o. Lion Tailors, clothing made in or der and pressing club, no eatimalo made yet. Stock was around $1,000. T. s. Chiplcy, automobiles, had TIlC Losses. throe R M. P. cars in store. All were taken out but were damaged consid erably. Hotel Bullt in ISO?. The Oregon hotel was built by the late Joel S. Bailey in IS'JO and open ed to the public that year under the management of H. J. Brlnson, who has kept It continuously. Last year Joel S. Bailey. Mr. Marion Holt, of Greenville visit ed Mr. and Mrs. \V. C. Hrownlee last week. Mr. and Mrs. Ambrose Holder, has returned from a pleasant visit with relatives in Greenville. Mr. and Mrs. G. N. Gray. spent Thursday night with Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Curry. The Dials school boys crossed bats with the Eden nine Friday afternoon. Mr. Hen Campbell is installing a new ginnery outfit, preparatory for work later on. No doubt he will do a good business, as the Hrooks broth ers have all the work they can do. Mr. Murphie Mahafl'ey of Furnian University, spent the week-end with his parents. How about the state Democratic convention in May? According to some of the state papers,!it will bo a toss ui> whether our delegates to the national convention will vote for the nomination of Wilson or Harmon. There's no mistake that Harmon lias a strong party in the state with Gov. Please heading it. It is to In? hoped however, that the "big four" will be a Wilson delegation.
