In your Issue of two weeks ago, un der the bead of "The Whiskey and Cocain TraJe" you say "Rs,iov;s come frohl all ever the countv thit tho :.c groes are using Cocaine, and in fact, eome say it is actually taking t.'te place of whiskey." Now those who have watched the liquor questfon, and the methods of the enemies of tem perance or of prohibitive or restric tive measures, for a long series of years, are at no trouble to see that you are mislead by the element that is trying to make you think that the drug habit is as bad as liquor. 1 have made Inquiry of country doctors who tell me that they know of no alarming use nor increased use of cocaine since dis pensary days. Who. that has studied this question of the liquor and drug habit that does not know that they are retractive, that the use of the <>ne will bring about the use of the other. If the use of cocaine lias grown of late, then with the open sale of liquor it would increase ten times faster. Now, let no one think that I would for a moment minimize the evil of the drug habit Nor say one word that would lessen the effort to enforce the law respecting the sale of deadly drugs, nor fail to warn the young against the terrors of becoming a vic tim to their use, but let not the un wary be deceived by their misleading ?wilfully misleading argument that cocaine is taking the place of liquor, and that the drug habit is making as much crime as liquor caused in the davs of its public sale. Every one that has watched things at the magistrate's court the mayor's court in this city (where on every,'1 Monday morning, and on mornings following public occasions, tho poor victims of drink were hauled up and compelled to nut up the hard-earned money that ought to have gone to wife and children) and the docket of the court of sessions, know too well, that all manner of crime, not only breaches of the peace, assault and battery and murder, but those Infa mous crimes, burglary, arson, larceny have since closing the dispensary, been reduced beyond all expectation. No it is not only on Fair days, but on all days that law and order reigns in Laurens. In the city? Yes, and to the utmost borders! Apropos of the question. 1 go back to the comments of the Columbia State, to illustrate with what avidity the enemies of temperance, or of re restrlctlve measures, against liquor will seize on everything of a mislead ing character In a vala effort to prove true the old thread-bare falsehood that ?'Prohibition docs not prohibit." They who say such things mean ?hat prohibitory measures fail to bet ter things or fail to lessen the use of drink. Those who have lived long enough to see the difference between a community, or town, where liquor is sold and where the sale is forbid den by law, simply know that this Is not true, or else his reasoning facul ties are so utterly dull or stupid as to render them incapable, or unfit to j judge what Is or is not safe or best '] for their country. (f "The State" hasn't a good object lesson showing the beauties of tho c losed saloon, I don't know the reason. Take the police, magistrate and ses sions court records of the city of Co lumbia and county, and those of Alken with North Augusta and Horse Creek Valley. (Would it be a had break to call these two the banner counties for crime and disorder?) and street and highway scenes, and compare them with Spai'tanbttrg, Laurens and other counties and then answer. If Maine has gone wrong you don't have to go far to gel the reasons why. i I have been pondering them some of late. Among th ? lethargy of the church of moral and Christian forces as con trasted with the zeal of the forces of sin and evil whose activity is never c using end without end. Creed of gain in thosp who trlfflc In liquor, the i iiiilueneo of the cities win ro crime and immorality congregates. Saloon poll t tip.--, wickedness Ju high places those In authority conniving at the traffic for political or mercenary purposes? the hydra-headed monster, the liquor power?those baleful Influence spreads Itself from centre to circumference. ; and Which never fails to use its ill cotton gains to defeat prohibition or restrictive laws, while proclaiming the falsehood th.it they sell as much liquor In prohibition territory as where the sale is legalized. And then last, but perhaps not least, that oceured to me, is the great newspapers whose Influ ence can so often, and so importun ably be enlisted on the wrong side, on the side of wrong against right. In defense of error and against truth, i for the oppressor against the oppress ed, for thai which will pull down against that which Will build Up. Those newspapers tlint can he Induced by some means to still proclaim in the teeth of the facts that "Prohibition does not prohibit." Let The State take notice that, so far as our own observation has gone. that ihe days, both in town and coun ty, have been "pleasant for the ladles and children" ever since the closing of the dispensary three years ago to day in Laurens county. Could money be hanked against hopes, homes, happiness and peace, a thousand million would be too low to price the value of It.
