DEFECTIVE MEAL TO BE CLEANED OUT Commissioner Watson Is Making War on the Poor Quality of Meul Ilelng Shipped Into This State. Columbia. August 17.?With two in spectors In the city of Columbia, aud three in other portions of tho State, all busily engaged in taking and send ing in to the laboratories samples of corn meal now being sold for human food, it is evident that a most deter mined campaign is well under way to eliminate from South Carolina the spoiled and highly dangerous meal, Jt is believed, has been sold in large Quantities. In addition to these five inspectors, a special man left at 7 o'clock this morning for other States, where he will examine into the source of the supply of this meal . Prosecutions May Result. "Inspectors today," said Commis sioner E. J. Watson, "are taking sam ples of corn meal In every retail, wholesale and distributing bouse in Columbia, and sending them to the laboratories." Wherever spoiled corn meal has been found, orders have been immediately giv?n, withdrawing it from sale, pending a final determina tion of what action will be taken with regard to the sellers and manufactur ers. This Anal action will depend to a large extent, it is stated, upon the report of the inspector, who Is inves tigating the factories from which the impure stuff was sent out. If it is found that spoiled corn was used as a basis of manufacture, it is prova ble that some prosecutions will fol low. Only Recently Discovered. Tlie fact that spoiled corn meal lias been Sold throughout the State in large quantities, was certainly discov ered only quite recently, rominission er Watson received a day or two ago reports from the chemical analysis of samples of corn meal, which had been taken by inspectors in eleven points In the State. These analyses all show ed that the acidity ran far above the normal and safe limits. Since these llrst eleven samples ci mo In, the Inspectors have been tak ing samples promiscuously through out the State and the laboratories arc kept busy analyzing them. When the report is received, and showfs the meal to be unsafe, orders are being given which, will prohibit the sale of any corn meal goods in that particu lar store manufactured by the com pany whose goods have thus been shown to be unsafe for use. Thus a large portion of the stock isitied up in each of the communities where in vestigation has shown bad meal. Acidity too High. Meal showing a high percentage of acidity, and therefore unfit for food, has been found at Union, Chester. Clinton, Niifcty Six, Bath, Batesburg, Cnlhoun Falls, Lancaster and Colum bia. Samples from a number of other points have been received also, and j are now being examined. It is stated / that a large lot came In this morning from towira In the Piedmont section. Nothing can be learned for several days as to tho result of the Investiga tion in Columbia, although some bad meal has been found here already. The normal acidity for good corn meal Is 14 or 15 per cent. In meal where tho acidity runs higher than 30 per cent, It Is stated, the stuff is unfit for use. Of a large lot of spoil ed meal the percentage varied all tee way from 32 per cent to f>0 and higher. Manufactured Outside State. All of the meal which has been found to be spoiled, it ;s stated, has been manufactured outside of this State. There Is a heavy penalty fixed both by the State laws and by the Fed eral laws prohibiting the sale of corn meal unfit for use and the mnttor Is a very serious one, indeed, with tho manufacturers of other 'Sates v. bo have been thus sending spoiled meal Into this State for sale.?News and rourler. Edltor Honoycutt was among tho visitors who attended tho Live Stock Association meeting at Waterloo sov eraf* weeks ago. In his paper "The Southern Cultivator" he recounted his experiences and observations while there. The following Is what he had to Bay: At an invitation of Mr W. C. Wharton we went over to Waterloo to be present on the occasion of the visit of the Agricultural train and the meet ing of the County Live Stock associa tion of Laurens county. Waterloo Is a small place on the Coast Line road from Greenwood to Laurens, and ele ven miles this side of Laurens. The country does not seem to be thickly settled, and we were surprised when Mr. Wharton said he expected 2.001) people to be present, but the South Carolina people have a way of doing things, even when politics are not con cerned. So the neople began to ar rive by rail, automobile and buggy, and soon the grounds were covered with farmers, their wives, sons and daughters, until the crowd soon ran up to 1.500 to 2.000. The farmer did not bring in many cows or bogs, but the in a res rorse-colts and mule-colts came in abundance, and fine ones, too. We certainly enjoyed seeing the Inter est nanifested in horse breeding. It w a great day for Waterloo, not a defeat like Napoleon experienced, but a signal victory. Prof. Harrow and his colleagues had the largest hear ing given them upon their route. We were the guest of Col. .1. H. Wharton, one of tho old type court eous and hospitable country gentle men, and he gave us, as well as all the visitors, all the cordial attention one could desire. The colonel has been in Office for thirty-two years, but this has not ruined him as a farmer. He still finds time to personally direct his farm operations and has been quite successful. However, he has been In a dry streak this year, and in this com munity much of the cotton did not come up until the middle of July, ow ing to a thirteen weeks' drouth. You would see Heids with cotton two and a half and three feet high, and then that Which lately came up only a few Inches high The crops in the western portion of Laurens. as well as portions of the other western counties of South Caro lina are very poor compared with their usual good crops. Still the ma jority seemed hopeful and happy. Laurens Is a great county, tilled with good, thrifty and industrious farm ers. Any county is great in propor tion as her people make her so, and Laurens has manv farmers, young and old ones, of tho true type, since they farm on the right plan If you are pale, weak, languid or anaemic a few doses of Bio (dine Liv er Pills will Increase the supply and improve the suastlty of blood.
