We have on the bench In South Carolina men, both learned In the law and distinguished for Christian character. Hut we are surprised that, in their lectures to grand juries and while discoursing upon lawlessness and crfme, they fail to go a little fur ther and warn their countrymen that the Chief source of crime is the pub | lie sale of liquor. Is It postble that some of our judges who, while falling ? In moral courage io speak out from I the bench, that which their conscience surely dictates, spend sofne time while off duty, pointing out to the dear peo ple the glories of revenue from the sale of liquor, as Illustrated by Alken and Rlchland? Is it possible that any one of them would be willing that those counties should continue the crime-producing and soul-destroying traffic, to the end that public revenue might abound? Or Is one of them willing to reestab lish the sale of liquor in a community In order to reduce the taxes on his large property holdings and thereby save a few pitiful dollars, while he knows in his inmost soul that every dollar of revenue that ever came from such sale means the sacrifice of homes, hearts, hopes, happiness and heaven? I But, is it th judge's place or duty to sermonize? Yes. It Is his duty forever to point opt that which will build up and warn against that which will pull down. A half century ago, South Carolina had a man of great learning and abil ity who presided in the courts of the State, by the name of John Belton O'Neal. He was not only a distin guished lawyer and jurist, but had In a very high degree those higher attributes of character which never fall to win the gratitude and enduring remembrance of his countrymen. Whilst others, honored with place, able perhaps brilliant, but failing in their I ideals and drawing from sensual, sor j did. mercenary, or ambitious motives, the life, the rule, the motive and re ward of all their actions and dying sink into obllvloun forever. What Would Judge O'Neal Do! Suppose he could hold court in Alken now. In passing death sentence on a poor shivering culprit at the bar, and In usual stereotyped phrase warn ing him to prepare for his Inevitable end, would he stop there? I trow not. He would go further and point out to the grand Inquest of the county the curse of the sale of liquor. "Gentlemen, you congratulate your people, and no doubt fallcltate your selves, upon the fact that you have money in your treasury. Ardinarily this is well, but we must not forget that a plethoric public treasury is not always proof of real prosperity. Ev en now the treasury of the United States groans under the weight of its 'cumulation of hard earned money wrung from millions of toiling men women and children In the form of unjust taxes. The despotisms of the old world, ancient and modem, boast ed of vast treasuries, while their en slaved millions, from whom unjust tribute lias forever been extorted, have cried out to humanity that their bur dens were greater than they could bear. Gentlemen, I confess much re gret that I cannot join In your con gratulations, for, I am told that the great bulk of this revenue came from the dispensing of liquor. It Is neces sary only to stop and think for a mo ment to realize that for every dollar that the county gets from that source, society?men, women and children? have lost many fold in actual money outlay, yea. an hundred-fold, could virtue and peace and happiness be cs 'tlmated in dollars and cents. "Than to get revenue in tills way a small tax lovy will be Infinitely better. Bettor some bonds than moral bank ruptcy. . Gentlemen, do you ask for a remedy for* the unusual prevalence of drtinkonoss, disorder and crime in your .county? Why. Mr. Foreman, you have only to look around yott; Go to Spar enburg, Groonvllle or Laurens where l there is no public stile of liquor and see the difference. Compare with yours the records of their courts, es pecially the city, or police court, for this will always show the rise and fall of Crime and disorder in a town, great or small. It will always show the extent of the consumption of liquor -o matter how procured. Tho one remedy to begin with is to close your dispensaries. Put the sale of liquor In a class with those things that arc forbidden by the law. But they will tell you that prohibition don't prohibit. They who say this mean a lie, but speak tho truth. They mean that it doos not. lessen the use or consump tion of drink, they know this Is not true. That prohibition laws against the sale of liquor do not wholly stop tho sale no consistent tempcranco man has ever claimed, no more than they would claim that prohibition laws against stealing has wholly prohibit ed theft. "The whole question presented for your solution Is bow much can you lessen or restrict, the use of liquor by outlawing the sale, by closing all plac es of sale. Whether mankind will ev-1 er attain to the Ideal of freedom from, or prohibition of liquor aelllng, and other crimes and curses that afllict humanity, till tho mlllenlum, shall have come. Infinite Wisdom above can tell. "Today the Christian pat riot's burden Is to labor for restriction, if ho can not att. In prohibition, of the ills that beset our race. "Just as well argue for the repeal of the laws aaginst larcency because some will steal, or to repeal the sta tute against murder because some will kill, as to cry out against pro hibitory liquor laws because bad men will violate them. Hut now, really, gentlemen' does prohibition prohibit or restrict? I go Into many localities In the discharge of my duties In the courts of South Carolina and I have no hesitation In telling you. gentlemen, that the conditions In these places where the sale of liquor is now for bidden Is for better In every way than while they had the saloon or dispen sary. The laws are being well en forced and the p.eoplo prosperous. You rarely see a drunken man. Even on public occasiuiis they nave none of those disorderly scenes that mark public gatherings In localities where whiskey is sold. "I would not assume the role of the minister of the Gospel, but there are times and opportunities in the life of every man no matter what his call ing or station, when a high sense of duty impels to speak out on these questions, upon the proper solution of which, depend the weal or woe of his country." HURT IX AUTO ACCIDENT. ('apt. W. E. Gonzales, Editor of The State, in Wreck >"ear Fountain Inn. Greenville. July 21.?Capt. W. E. Gonzales, editor of the Columbia State, who was injured in an auto wreck near Fountain Inn this morn ing, was brought to tlie Greenville Infirmary about noon, where his phy sician, Dr. C. B. Earle, said tonight, after a thorough examination, there are no injuries, except a contusion of the back of the head and a slight wound in the back, and that Capt. Gonzales will be out In a few days. Capt. Gonzales was en route to Ashevllle, and when the driver of his car saw a number of wires hanging across the road, where telephone line men were at work, though out of sight of the chauffeur, he threw the emerg ency brakes on the machine and the car swerved to one side of the road; a tire exploded and the car turned turtle, pinning Capt. Gonzales anjd the driver underneath. They man aged to extricate themselves, however, the driver being given attention at Fountain Inn and .Mr. Gouzales being brought to Greenville.
