THE COTTON CROP ABOVE THE AVERAGE Long Drought Has (Not Des troyed Chances. CONDITIONS FAIR IN THIS COUNTY A Census Taken of (lie Situation all Over the State by the ?Columbia State" Shows that the Farmers of South Carolina lime no Itlglil to Fool Blue. Monday's edition of The Columbia State contained reports from all of the counties of the state relative to conditions as to cotton. It said that due, in groat measure, to the ra'r.n of fast week, which relieved the drought before it had done serious damage, ex cept possibly In scattering sections, the 1911 cotton crop In South Carolina from present Indications, promises to be equally as good If not better than last year. No section of the State, from re ports, has suffered materially; but to the contrary, In a number of counties larger yields are indicated than in a number of years. Taking the State as a whole, tho condition up to the end of last week indicates that the cotton crop this year will not be off on account of the drought that for a time was feared would materially affect the yield. Conditions may be said at this time to indicate a 100 per cent, crop, al though in some scattering sections where cotton was replanted and did not get a good stand toe vield will net he more than two-thirds or three fourths; out In other sections from 15 to L,r> per cent, more cotton Is expected than last year. Heavy fertilization and the unusu ally flue preparation of the soil, deeper plowing and the application of new methods 's telling this season, but for which it is safe to say that the drought would have proved of greater damage; but compared with last year at this time the crop Is In far better condi tion. The fields are clean, there Is no grass, and indications are that a much larger per cent, of the cotton will be picked this year than last. Last year at this time the fields were full of grass, m&kiog the cost of production greater than this year, and, indeed, last yar the farmers had a hard fight to keep the grass from overrunning the cotton. What grass that follows the recent rains will be easily kept in check this yea r. If the conditions at pre8ent can be compared with conditions existing at this time hist year, the two seasons being absolutely different, the one ex tremely* dry and the other extremely wet, the farmers of the State are, from reports received, in better shape now than then, and the Indications for a full cton a great deal better than last year. Laurens County Conditions. The cotton crop in Laurens County ... '.. 'egular owing to the lateness in getting stands o.: . t least 30 per cent, of the acreage. On clay lands the plant has suffered for the lack of moisture, and It was on this character of soils that trouble, was experienced in securing a stand. On the gray or lighter soils the weed, while uniform ly small, Is in a healthy condition, free from grass and any kind of dis ease, and is fruiting. As compared with last year, the crop is somewhat later as u whole, but the exceptional ly line preparation In the way of deep er plowing and increased fertilization is a factor that Is expected to bring the crop up to normal conditions with in a short time, now that the rains have set In. With the exception of a few remote locnlltltes copious showers have fallen over the county In the last week and the crop Is reported to be showing the inbuence of more favorable weather conditions.
