A TAX LEW OF FIVE MILLS Columbia, S. C, Jon. 20.?A tax levy of 5 millb will be necessary for the state government of South Carolina by an estimate prepared and sent to the general assembly bv f'ompt roller Gen eral Jones This estimated levy for this year is three-fourths of a mill less than the levy for 1010. The 5 mills levy will be sufficient If the estimated expenditures are not exceeded. The estimated expenses of the gov ernment of South Carolina for 1911 will be $1,642,000 according to Comp troller General Jones. Thia is an in crease of $04,019,84 over 1910. He says that it will be necessary for the State to borrow the sum of J??O.OO for run ning expenses for 1911. January 30 I to February 11. At no time in the his I tory of agriculture has this nll-im ! portant crop been so recognized?one I day being set aside, known as "Na tional Corn Day." The festivities in celebration of "King Corn" will con tinue throughout the day with address es by prominent fanners and famous orators, when the matter of produc tion and consumption of the corn crop will be threshed out. It will be one of the most notable days of the great est of all agricultural expositions, and one which will be a sterling milestone in the progress of agriculture. While the entire day will be given t.i discussion of corn improvement by noted specialists, the evening program Will be of still greater interest to many of the vlsi'ors, for the splendid National Corn Banquet will be the feature. Plates will be laid for 1500 guests, the Ohio Corn Improvement association to be the host. The ban quet will be held in tho Immense Ex position auditorium, and with (lie grandest menu of all corn products. I intermingled with catchy music and other entertainment features, the ev ening will he one of much gaiety. The program for the day includes addresses by P. (!. Molden of Iowa; ('. O. Williams. Ohio; Q. i. Christie. I Indiana; William Deltrlck, Illinois; C. G. McCall, Ohio; w. .1. Splllman, department of agriculture. At the evening corn banquet, Sec retary James Wilson of the depart ment of agriculture will be the prin cipal speaker. His topic will be "The Evolution of American Agriculture." I Senator Horton of Ohio. Senator Clapp I of Minnesota*, and other notables, will speak.
