Assembled in the city of Laurens arc the representatives of the Bap tist denomination in South Carolina? foregathered liere for the first time in the history of the Stnte convention for the ninetieth annual session. Ap proximately throe hundred ministers and laymen, representing more than one thousand Baptist churches and ono hundred and thirty thousand members, are here to render reports of the past year's work and to dis cuss plans and means of carrying "forward the kingdom of their Lord" in the great State of South Carolina during the next twelve months. The Stale convention of South Caro lina Baptists was organized in the city of Columbia in 1821. Its purpose v. i for the "further unifying of the Baptist churches In the State for closer co-operatton in the great work of missions an deducatlon." From the very first the Haptist organization in terested Itself in State mission work and in 1SGG the convention named a committee which constituted the first State Mission Hoard. and down through all these years the efforts of this official board have been directed Hi carrying out the original motto: "South Carolina for Christ." and Its purpose: "A Haptist Church in Every Locality in the state." Home and for* I ign missions also engage the hearty support of this organization, over Blxty thousand dollars having been contributed for these objects during tht conventional year of 1900. Doubt less it has been much larger this year. The State convention is directly in terested in Furmnn university, the Southern Haptist Theological Seminary at Louisville and the Greenville Fe male college. Other schools and col legts in the State, however, receive supiKirt and encouragement from the Baptists, though not under the super vision of the convention. In all the departments of church work, fostered by the Baptist denom ination of the State, this convention year has been wonderfully blessed. There has been a great ingathering of men for the Cause, and now at the close of another twelve months the church and association.-!) representa tives meet for association and mutual help?to get inspiration for bettei work and larger things. Laurens is now regarded as one of the Baptist stronghol Is of the State The great assemblage of. The great Bticcess of the Corn Sh w, which was held in the court houst bejc Friday, should prove as an Incen- ' ti\? to do even more and better things next year. 'he fair was a success in every particular and the young men deserve a great deal of credit for the line showing lhat they made. However, though the fair was a j success, the people of Laurens county should not be content with only a corn show. Nearly every other live ami progressive county In the State had a big county fair this fall and In ; nearly every Instance they were snc CCSofui. Numbers of them invested , Paige sums of money in grounds, build IngS and premiums and, from the ' newspaper reports, all of them paid expenses. NOW, there is no reason why Laurens county should not get ] in line with the other progressive counties and have an even better ex-1 hlbltlon next year. It 1? not neees. ' nary the first year to have buildings, J race tracks, carnivals and the like, I but let the farmers of Lauren? coun- i ty bring in their prize farm produce, prize stock, cattle and poultry of; which she might well boast of, and j lot us have a nice. Instructive, con genial and up-to-date exhibition of thp county's resources. It will be easy to do if the people will begin to prepare at once. Numbers of the prominent people of the county have already voiced this name sentiment and promised to co operate In making a fine exhibition. To have a successful exhibition of tliis kind it is not uecessury to have an expensive race track and carnival company. It Is true that these fea curos of the county fairs help pay ex penses when a large outlay has been made, but the kind of exhibition, that wo would want to make would not require a large expenditure of money. ! Doubtless the merchant? of the cltj I would he glad to offer such premiums 1 as would be needed for the adverttse ! ment that WOUld be in It. And be i sides, as Supt. Pitts said at the (Urn ! Show, the prizes are not wdiat should he most valued in these contests, but it Is the lessons learned ami the |n : splratlon received that prove most ! beneficial in affairs of this kind. Therefore, we would urge that some j steps be taken to have a larger and better exposition of the county'.- re sources bore next fall. To have a suc cessful exhibition will require imme diate action, so that the farmers will j be able to prepare Preparations for ' agricultural exhibits have to be be gun early in the year so that lands may be gotten in good condition, stock being gotten In good shape and a variety of products pranted. It Is unnecessary to recount the great benefits to be derived from such exhibitions. The great awakening. In agricultural matters, that has taken hold of the people of the State is di rectly traceable to the agricultural and educational gatherings that have proved so popular In late years. There is no question of the benefits to be derived. The only question is. "Will I we take advantage of our opportuni | ties?" As there are numbers of men in i the county who have had considera I ble experience in such matters, we i open the columns of this paper to j them and let them make any BUgges j tions that they might how an organ I Ization might be perfected or plans made to have a larger and better show next year. We would like to hear a ready re j sponse to this, for Daurens county i should no longer be In the rear guard, i when the rest of the State is making stich rapid strides in the agricultural and educational uplifl of their people. THE SPIRIT OF IT. "I am going to farming." This was the declaration of one of the ninety seven Daurens county farmer boys who wero exhibitors Friday in the Hoys' Corn Club contest as he was leaving the court house with his ex hibit, at the conclusion of the day's exercises. He carried in one hand ] a newly purchased piece of an im- | proved turn-plow, a strikingly im pressive indication of that boy's spir it and purpose. Although he failed to receive a prize of any kind In the contest be showed no disappointment over the result. "I am going to farm ing." Jerry Moore, the Florence youth who is the accredited champion corn grower of the Stale today, has a strong rival in this Daurens boy in bis modestly avowed hope of "doing better next time." ? ? ? NEW RAILROAD COMMISSIONER. Although our good Governor Ansel was a little slow In making his selec tion of the new railroad commissioner, to succeed the late Mr. J. M. Sullivan. ! he made a very wise choice when he j did act. Governor Ansel was con- : fronted with quite a problem in mak ing a selection from so large a num ber of men. among them being very competent as well as Influential men . of affairs in South Carolina, there be- : Ing two very estimable men from this county, ami doubtless he acted very wisely in taking his choice from the ranks of those w ho had not applied ; for the job.
