Spartanburg, October 10.?At a meet ing of the Spartanburg real estate board this body put Itself on record as being in favor of the adoption of the "Torrens system," of registering land titles. This real estate board is com posed of about fifteen of the leading real estate agents in thn city, who have banded themselves together in order that by co-operation they may accom plish more for the good of their pro fession. The fame of the Torrens Land Act lias extended around the world and has introduced a new system for the de termination nnd registration of titles and the establishment or boundaries. To be adopted to the registration of lauds in immense tracts which sold at so much per square mile Instead of so much an acre of foot, this system was devised by an Englishman, Sir Thomas Torrens, wdio at the time was collector of customs at Adelaide, South Australia. He embodied his ideas fn a bill, which became law in 1858. It has since been adopted in Victoria, New South Wales, Gueenland,' West Australia, parts of Great Britain nnd In the county of London It is compul sory. British Columbia and other Eu ropean countries. In America the friends of the ays tem are making much progress^ In Cook county, Illinois, there ha* been $20,000,000 worth of property register ed under 3,645 applications. On Massa chusetts 3,000 applications registered property valued at $35,000,000. In, Colorado and Washington the law has recently been adopted. In Minnesota the law was at first restricted to the three most populous counties, but it has since been adopted over the en tire State. This was done only after a successful trial of six years. The United States government has put the system in force In the Philippine Is lands. A committee from the New York legislature Is Investigating the merits of the new law with a view of establishing it. The system is simply this: A judi cial determination to a piece of prop erty and the Issurance of certificate under the direction of the court setting the fact of the ownership and incuin brances, If any. Wherever the system is put in force it will win its way, be cause it is modern up-to-date and bet ter, more simple, safer and more cer I tain system. It Is less expensive, both to the owner and to the taxpayer and I prospective purchaser. It will tend to enhance the value of real estate by making it a quicker asset. Because it offers a good title absolutely guaran teed by the State against a title based on the opinion of an attorney, it is the best system ever devised to make a title, be it good or bad, available for immediate use The people ot the country are be coming educated to the need of such a system, and the step taken by the Spartanburg real estate men In meet ing with much commendation all over Spartanburg county. The fanners have become Interested In it and it is probable that it will he adopted in the near future. ( ATAItRII SUFFERERS. (?nod Things to knew.
