Obituaries and Curd of thanks: One ccut ? word* Entered at th*? postofllco. at Laurens, S. C. as second class mail matter. LAURENS, S. C, SEPT. II, 1910. Well, even the shouting Is hut an echo. ? ? ? Verily, it is one campaign after an- , other in dear old l aurens. Meantime thousands of voters can now turn their attention to big cotton and coin campaign. ? ? * Anyhow.a governor of the proud old , Palmetto Stale has been nominated , Which is equivalent to an election in , South Carolina. ? ? ? In a little while reports will be com- , ing in about this and that hapless one , losing Iiis hand or arm in a eotton pin. , and to this list very likely, will be ndded ? accidental Ores" that usually break out in the early fall through \ carelessness. ? ? ? It would he a great addition to the appearance of the court lions square if the proper authorities would see to, it that all the old papers, stick-., bones, remains of lunches, et cetera, resting in peace on the lawn, he removed to their proper place the garbago can. ? ? ? The prompt and accural j handling of the election returns last night is duo largely to the good work of the telephone operators. The conve nient system used by The Advertiser for giving the returns to the public was due mainly to the kindness of the Opera House company, who gave the hall free. To all of these we wisli to extend our thanks. ? * * We are also indebted to our county correspondents ami to sevt rnl of our friends here in town for the valuable assistance rendered. ? * ? Cole 1.. Please will be the next governor. Here's hoping that, by a remarkable change of tactics, he will make South Carolina as good a gover nor as he has repeatedly promised. Mr. Please e rtaiuly has the intellect and the talents to make a good leader and our only hope of a decent govern ment is that ho will turn these qual ities in the right direction. ? ? ? CITY DELIVKKY. It is now squarely up to the City council to "gel busy" and complete' the work necessary to give the town ; free city delivery. The government granted Laurens the right to have this : addition to our postal system over a I year ago when the postofllco receipts here were sufficient to entitle the town to It. The only remaining require ments to he fullfllled are the naming of streets and the numbering of the houses. The city is certainly able to' afford the rather small sum required to do this. We realize thai the city treasury is not overflowing, hut cer tainlng so important an addition to our postofllco sorvh ?> should no! he put aside on account of a few hundred dollars. ? * * "LUST M K l'<>Kt> LT." It li not often that a community so enlightened and r.'lined is compelled to silently submit lo such an arraign ment as appoared last week In another column of this paper with reference to cemetery desecration 111 Laurens. Put. when the accusation i< so ab solutely true (and withal so kindly in tone) i; Is not enough to simply hang our heads and say: "Guilty as charged!" it is one thing to negatively allow to arise the conditions therein so ac curately sei forth. It is another and an entirely different thing to knowing ly permit such conditions to continue after they have been plainly brought to public notice. This, we take it. is exactly the spirit which impels the Civic League to clr. eulate a paper hearing the following caption: "For the purpose of properly en closing the Laurens graveyard by providing on the street side, a rock retaining wall four feet high and eighteen Inches thick and above it a steeply slanting green sod on up to the top of the embankment; on the other three boundry lines, a substantial four-foot fence (of high, closely placed patlngs or strong close-woven wire); at the entrance, a substantial gate which shall be securely locked every night, I agree to give the amount stated opposite my name, provided: 1st. that the city authorities lend their assistance to the ladles who have taken the Initiative In this all-Important matter. 2nd. that the actual work on the Improvements above described be commenced not later than September L'Oth, 1910, and be completed at the Brat possible moment thereafter." It is not Within the power of every one of us to contribute a large amount; but. in suc h a matter, tlie same total sum freely given by the community at large is worth ten times over what It would be worth if donated in bulk by a few enthusiastic individuals. There Is room for all on this vidi of honor; and the widow's mit - is as welcome as the rieb man's mor. . For the good name of l.aureus, therefore, and in behalf of civie right eousness, It is our plain duty to carry out the injunction which the Inscrip tion on one shaft thus simply hut eloquently proclaims: "We loved them in life. Let us not forget them in death." 11 IS SCHOOL TIME AGAIN. Clinton Hoys ami Girls Ort for the Coming Years' Work. The work day planned for Saturday Sept. 21 next for the Orphanages of South Carolina should he observed by all our people. Especially should the children in the Sunday schools roll up a big amount if they all should pick cotton or get some job of work that day and send the earnings to one of the Orphanages. There are nearly 2,000 Sunday schools in South Caro lina in Baptist, Episcopal, Methodist and Presbyterian churches, and Jui I a few dollars from each school would make a splendid total.
