I immediately stated opposite my name an amount which 1 considered reasonable and proper?with the nota tion that 1 am willing to give more for the purpose of constructing a fence which will he a fence In fact as well as In name. I mean that, as any one will see who looks at it, the present fence?wtiat there Is of It? Is not such that "repairing" could ever make it what it ought to be in any event. With real appreciation, therefore of ? he efforts of the author of the paper above referred to and with all due deference to the good people of Lntl rens?among whom I was born and With whom I purpose to spend the re mainder of my days as may be within my power. All this will require an outlay ? >!* money which, I well know, the city treasurer is unable to supply; but you and I can furnish the funds with out the least inconvenience to any one. provided only that the subject is giv en a few moments' thoughtful consid eration by every man and woman who reads this earnest ami most respect ful appeal. Leading my home county of Xewbor rv with a handsome majority and leading all the other candidates in the surrounding counties of Lexington, Union, Saluda, and Fairfleld. as well as in your county, my vote was gen eral throughout the State, without re gard to geographical lines or to vo cations In life. Although there were six candidates in the held, in seven teen of the forty-three counties I re ceived the highest vote given to any candidate. Having led by several thousand votes in the first primary, and having received so many assuranc es of new support in the second. I am confidently expecting to he nominated for governor. I have sought to place my campaign upon a high plane, Booking the votes of the people only on my own merits. If elected. I shall be the governor of the whole people, without regard to section or class. I desire to warn the voters against eleventh-hour rumors and false charg es. I kindly thank you from the bottom of my heart for the many acts of kind ness shown we during the recent cam paign, and I also kindly thank the voters of Laurens county for the splendid vote given me on Aug. UOth. I especially feel grateful to those voters who voted for me and I desire to say that I have the kindest feeling toward those who could not see their way clear to do likewise. Two years ago 1 ran for the legis lature and stumped the county against the dispensary, f was defeated, hut 1 believe that my attack upon the ilis pensary nad something to do with the overwhelming vote against it at the election in Nov.. 1908. which wiped it out of Laurens county. This year 1 again ran for the legisla ture and stumped the county against extravagant appropriations by the general assembly and against the un. equal assessnn nt of property for taxa tion, i was again defeated, hut I hope that my attack on the general assem bly for extravagance and the unequal assessment of property for taxation will cause the representatives you elect, to (>nter their protest against extravagant appropriations and unjust equalization of property. I made the race this year from a sense of duty and for patriotic rea sons only, thinking if I could he elect ed to the legislature. I would he of some benefit to the people. Y< i v respectfully. YY.
