LETTISH FROM MR. RIAL. Giving Excellent Reasons For Patron i/in". Home Enterprises. Editor The Advertiser: We have been thinking for Borne time of asking space in your columns to explain to the public the reason why we organized The Home Trust company, and the object of this coin, pany. We will briefly state the rea sons, thinking, porhaps, we can bo of benefit to Hie public and knowing the public can be of service to us. It is well known that for a large part of the year it Is exceedingly diflicult to get money for fanning and other operations, owing to the limited amount of capital of our banks. The promoters of this company, therefore. thought there was a good Held here for additional funds, besides the other advantages which banks do not pos sess. We named the company "Home Trust Company" for the reason that overy dollar of Its twenty-five thous and dollar capital stock is owned in the county, and we expect to double ! the capital. It is to be sincerely hoped that ere long every member of every ; white family, or pretty much every family, will own some stock in some bank or Trust company within the county, or at least will have a bank account. A great many of the colored people are beginning to deposit their money in the banks and. they too should he aided and encouraged. Our farmers are rapidly learning bow to grow bettor crops, ami we are glad to know that the market price is more encouraging, and. probably will so continue, than it ever lias beeil in the! past. Therefore, our home people will have some surplus money to in vest. We all know that when we can get people to begin to save their ( earnings, ami especially children, it will not he long until they will Incul cate this habit, and will have funds for Investment. In fact, a line be tween saving an.I spending is a very narrow one. ami when once the habit of taking cue of what we make is llxcd upon us, our prosperity in life is pretty much assured. It should he a paramount endeavor of everyone to save something of their daily, monthly or yearly income, however littie they may make. Unfortunately, owing to our town having no railroads for a long number of years after the War. we did not get an even start with our neighboring towns towards prosperi ty. We were surrounded by railroads on every side in other counties and the trade from this county went to help build up C. reen vlllo, I'liion. Spnrtanburg, Honen Path. Newberry, etc. We did not got a start until we built roads along about Ins::. There was no bank in this county until I88?. There was very I it He trade in Lau rens up to that time. Therefore, our trade went to help build hanks in other counties and help to lay the foundations for their merchant's for tunes. There were als?) cotton mills in our adjoining counties pretty much all the while, and it was not until f800 that we had one in operation in this county. Hence, you see we had; very little opportunity to make money. We should not he discouraged because some of these other towns are ahead of us. They simply had the advan tages and got the start. What we along with others. Pave been endeav oring to do is to regain this trade for our town and to build up our banks, trust companies ami other institutions. We need a great pull and effort by not only our town people, but our friends all over the county. They come to town to attend court, pay taxes and for other purposes, and (hey "an purchase as cheaply here an 1 lerhaps cheaper than they can in other towns. It is our ambition to have them move all their hank accounts in the county and patronize their home institutions. They know US and we know them, and we are beginning to be in position to extend them every accommodation consistent With good business. Of course we are working more especially in the interest of the Enterprise Rank, with Which we are connected, but we are not narrow enough to say but what the public will receive good treatment at the hands of any of our hanks. if our people would encourage the habit of depositing their money in the banks, perhaps the banks could aeconiodate their customers and would get along without any necessity of borrowing money from the North. By depositing money in the bank, our friends are relieved of the dangers of losing it. having it stolen, burned up, etc. and. moreover, they can check it out any day they desire without coining to town, and the check will operate as a receipt. Not only this, but they will be subserving the pub lic?by putting their money In the bnnk where it will circulate to the Interests of evoryone. HesldeH if the depositor desires to let the money remain for a certain time the hanks are willing to allow a fair interest. My great ambition Is for the South, and cspec'ally our county, to become independent. The way to accomplish tills is to depend upon our own re sources and efforts first. In a con versation last week to a president of * I a bank In nn adjoining county, he ; stated that last year his bank did not I have to borrow a single penny. That , county and those people are no bet ' ter than our people, but they have learned the lesson of sell" help. The deposits in this bank showed that its citizens did not keep their money at j home or wrapped up in their poc kets. The deposits not only help the officials of the bank, but help all the stockhold ers, and we are glad to slate that a great number of our people own stock in banks. Some of our books will show in the neighborhood of 200 stock holders and these are increasing. We are expecting to greatly increase out number of depositors this fall and hope to double amount of our depos. its. Now more especially its to the Trust company. Trust companies are some what new in ibis pint of the South, ami especially, in this county, yet they are as old as banks in the busi ness world. Hanks cannot loan money for longer than a year. Trust com panies can. National Hanks cannot loan money on real estate?Trust companies can One of the mos; use ful purposes is to act as executor, trustee, guardian .administrator, etc. The Idea occurred to us that it would bo exceedingly important to have some strong institution act as execu tor, guardian, etc. When one pre- i pares his will he naturally thinks of I the strongest person he can And to i make executor. Very often there arc no competent men in his family, and he looks elsewhere for an executor. This position is not one to be sort af ter and very frequently successful and responsible men decline to act in this capacity. Not only this. even, if they were to act. life is uncertain and possibly it would not be long be fore someone else would have to take Charge of the estate. We have all heard of too many instances where executors, administrators, etc.. have failed, squandered the estate, and the beneficiary received little or .milling, i At this time, while it great many of our people carry a large amount of insurance, and have very comforta ble estates, they would like to feel when they make their wills that the , party designated would receive the benefits. Not only this, but frequent ly executors and guardians are per suaded to change tbe investment or allow the beneficiary more advances than they should on account of sym pathy. Kven our best friend would hesitate to accept the guardianship of a very young child. This is all re lieved in the case of the Trust com pany. The ofilcors of the company would say that all the capital of the' Trust company is responsible for tbe acts of its officials, and that the will ; is its authority and cannot be changed. Hence, the parly appointed the Trust company will always Know nls or her wishes will be carried out. We con sider this one of the greatest needs of our community, and trust we have supplied the want. In addition to this business, the Trust company will take mortgages on real estate and can endorse and ' have redtscounted thereby enabling our people to have a little longer time, if necessary, to pay for their homes. It would be one of the great est advancements to our county if practically every farm could be cut in two and another residence started, and our young men encouraged to remain here ami own their own homes instead of going West. When a per son becomes a land holder he becomes a bettor citizen. Aiding our people to purchase land and build homes is one of our great efforts. Of course,' the capital is so small that we can not accomodnto many along this line at present, but if the stockholders think with me. we will Increase our capital next January, Probably, by that time we will be abb to pay a dividend on the present capital. By having more capita' and more de posits, the Trust company and banks will be able to aid the farmer to hold their COttOU in case they desire to do so. Not only this, but as the busi ness grows, we expect to buy and also sell mortgages on real estate. Will have titles examined and guar anteed, thereby, relieving the Investor of a great deal of annoyance and re sponsibility. These are only a few of the ad vantages and reasons why we estab lished this company, and we hope in the near future to make It better known, and that It will he of some service at least to our fellow citizens. We cordially InVttO the public to come in and see US concerning all the matters above mentioned nt any 1 time to suit their convenience. Yours very truly. Home Trust Company. N. B.
