RAMBLES ABOUT LONDON. By C. Lewis Fowler This Easter eve finds us cozily sit uated at Tranters Temperance Hotel In the heart of busy London. Since we arrived we have been rambling in and about London, seeing the sights and trying in some way to get our fingers upon tho pulse of English life. Many new observations have been made. Five weeks we spent here be fore. Llko most travelers we thought wo know as much about England in that time as the English people them selves. How sadly mistaken. No man can Interpret the underlying princi ples of any community life until he has lived there a long time, even then ho may be deceived. But there are some things which one can seo and understand fairly well. England today is not the England of yesterday. We are this morning in the heart of a new London. Great changes have been made and are yet to bo made. England, like till Europ. ean and oriental countries, is under going marvelous social and religious changes. Political. Fortunately wo have struck London In tho midst of a great political war fare. The situation Is tense, ami the various parties are at each other's throats with daggers. The House of Lords, a better name for which would be tho House of Despots, living as it does in the ages of the past, is strug gling for its last existence. What right anyway have the representatives of the church to rule a people in the name of the Church? The House of Lords is doomed because the policies for which it stands are such as to force the people to submit to tho church of England. This the people will not do longer. The age of the state or politico-ecciesiastical church has passed. Men will no longer be forc ed Into someone else's religious mold but will serve God in their own way. Episcopal Decadence. The Church of England did a great work for the English people at one time. It liberated the people from Roman despotism and superstition. It can never repeat that work. We are living In a day of religious freedom. The State church is being deserted by thousands, while the Independent churches, such its Congregationalists, Wesleyans and Baptists, are being thronged to their doors by eager wor shipers. Dr. John Clifford, pastor of one of tho largest Baptist churches and largest churches in the city. Lloyd George Chancellor of the Exchequer, and a Welch Baptist of prominence, are forcing with mighty hand the great principles of freedom to the front. It Is no unusual sight to see a State's church service with only the choir, the priest and a half dozen wor shipers. Parade held the Latin hears for years but the Anglo-saxon de mands reason. Kitiialism us Against Freedom. The reason for this is not far to hunt. While the State church is en deavoring to daz'/.lti the eyes of the people by her beautiful ritualistic ser vices and by her parade ami pomp, and to appeal only to the senses, the dis senting churches are making powerful and unmistakable appeals to the con science and intelligence. Their ap peal Is not fruitless, they are succeed ing. The largest church in London, a I Haptlst church, Spurgeon's Taber nacle. Is packed to the doors at every service. The same can be said of many other free churches?they are crowded. Kastor Festivities. Probably the hardest thing for us to understand Is the way London cel ebrates Laster. Good Friday here Is more genuinely a holiday than Christ mas is with us. Services were held in all churches yesterday, and this en tire City was still so far as business was concerned, ior every s'nop was closed. The same will be true on Monday. This happy Easter occa sion, Instead of producing joy, has put England into mourning. Especial ly the Catholic and Episcopal church es seem to be so sorry that Jesus is dead. They weep for Him as one who is dead forever. Personally I have ab solutely no sympathy with such. I have no tears to shed for my Lord. 1 have many to shed for myself, .lesus does not call us to his side to weep for Him. "Weep not for mo, hut for yourselves and for your children," are the words of our .Master. .lesus every where forbade weeping. He command ed singing. One of the things that the Roman Catholic church has done with its mediaeval art and modes of thought, its pictures of a helpless suf fer, has been to obscure the kingly Christ, the Saviour and Conquorer of the world. Christ is not dead. He is alive at the throne of Cod. He is with in us a living presence, lie both de mands and commands. He is a king with no worldly pomp or possessions, hut lie is king. No, He is not dead but alive foreverinore?Hallalujah. Let the earth be glad and not sad at Easter. A Great Treat. One of the greatest treats that has come my way here came yesterday at Wesley's Chapel when 1 was do f ACME QUALITY, Make the 7 Home Bright mm JQS?^^^ Worn, shabby floors, marred, scratched woodwork, dingy, scuffed furniture can all be refinished and made to look like new. NICHOLS & ROPER LAURENS.S.C. lighted to hear Samuel Chad wich, the great preacher and oxpositor from Leeds. Tomorrow we shall hear Arch ibald Drown at Spurgoon's Tabernacle, and Q. Campbell .Morgan. There are some great heralds of the Cross here in this city: Charles Brown, P. B. ?Tcy er, Dr. Philips and .T. II. Shakespeare. Probably a word about the great Welch revival would bo interesting to The Advertiser's readers. In a long conversation with Dr. J. H. Shakes peare 1 Inquired diligently into the af ter effect of the Welch revival. His words wore encouraging, While there has been a great reaction, it seems now that all who were saved will re main firm onto the end. During the season of the great excltment thous ands were swept Into the church, and some of them without conversion. These have gone away, while tens of thousands of the truly converted are with us and will be with us in the judgment, .lust at this time theCbris. tiatl leaders in Wales are teaching the people, with a hope of deepen!),-; and broadening their grasp up 0:1 the eternal verities, thus preparing them for spiritual conquest and activity. I wish 1 might have time in this ar ticle to speak ot this city more, of the grandeur of it, the life, the poverty, etc., hut my time would fall me. I should like to speak of Hunhill Fields, where sleeps Isaac. Watts, whose im- I mortal singing made possible the Wes leyan Reformation: where rests John' Bunyan, the immortal Baptist Libera tor; Daniel DeFoe, the dreamer, and others. I should like to write of West minister Abbey, the cemetery, where sleeps the royalty and nobility of Eng land, within sacred walls; of St. Paul, the third largest church in the world, hut this article must now close. I will write next week from Paris. London, March 2(1, 1910. A GOOD HE A SON. I,aureus People Can Tell You Why II Is So.
