The condition of the high schools of tho stato will be discussed at n conference of tho prin cipals and toachors to bo held In Co lumbla on May D and ?'?. Ii was decided at ho mooting of tho city school super Intondents hold in Columbia last win ter thai tills conference bo held. The tentatlvo programme for tho confer ence was announced yesterday by VV. II. Hand, state high school Inspector. It is urged that every hi?h school in the state be represented al tho meet ing, A number of vital riuestlons will be discussed at the conference. The following anoiiticeinenl was made yesterday by Prof. Hand: In response to a UtluminiOUS desire expressed al t1 mooting of the su perintendents t?f ? ity schools last De cember, a mooting or city superintend ents, high sc hool principals and high school teachers is called to meet in Columbia on Thursday? May ??? The meeting will convene in the university chapel on Thursday evening at 8:30, and will continue through Friday and Friday evening. "The onlire time will bo devoted to free ami open rouitd-tahlo discussions of questions of vital Importance to all grndos of high school work. No papers will 1)0 allowed, and every per son present is Invited to take part In the discussions. Among the questions to bo discussed are those: "I. The scope of the high school. The elements of a well-bnluuced high school course. Maximum number of subjects that can be profitably pursued. "i. Minimum number of weeks prof itably devote.I to ;i subject. "f>. An Interpretation of standard high school units. The place of Kngtlsh grammar in the high school. ?'7. What kind of literature is suit ed to blub school work. "X. What should be attempted in teaching high school literature. "!?. Character and quantity of arlth. tactic in the high school. ?'iti. The time necessary to complete high school nlgebrn. "II. A year's work in geometry. "12. The lirst lour weeks in the study of Latin. "13. Elective courses vs. elective sub jects. "II. Present college entrance re quirements. "In this period of transition and de velopment among the high schools of the state, the benefits to be derived from such a meet in? are vast. Every high school in the state ought to be represented. High school trustees should see thai the principal and as many teachers as possible attend. OOU. Davis has an en viable record in the Confederate ser vice. He went into the war as a mem ber of the Sixth South Carolina cav alry and nerved under G?ns. Hampton and Butler. For conspicuous gallantry in battle he was promoted over two captains, a major and lieutenant, and made the Commanding ofllcer of the regiment. Gen. Davis was grand treasurer of the grand lodge. A. F. M.. of South Carolina and general recorder of tin grand council of Royal and Select Masons, lie was a past master of Or anno lodge, No. 1 I. A. F. M. He served two terms as alderman and was at the time of his death a member of the tree commission of the city of Charleston. He was president of the South Caro lina Society of Sons of Revolution and a member of the South Carolina so ciety. Ho was also a prominent mem bcr of tho Citadel Square Baptist church.
