W. C. T. U. LEADERS VISIT CROSS HILL Agent McSwain Enlarging His Quar- 1 ters?A Vi9lt to Texas?Cotton Market Hushed. Cross Hill, Sept. 13.?Mrs. E. S. Her bert, president of the W. C. T. I'., and Miss Emma Gary, field secretary, vis ited Cross Hill last week in tho in terest of the temperance cause. Miss ?Gary lectured Wednesday evening and Mrs, Herbert Thursday morning. Both lectures were interesting and , instructive. These ladies are doing a good work and ought to be en couraged. Mr. L. F. McSwain, agent, is enlarg ing h>'s lumber shed, making a thirty foot addition. He is doing a good business. Mr. Luther Martin has opened a gro cery store in the Grant building. Miss Ltda Rudd is in Baltimore in the Interest of her millinery store. Mr. .1. Q. Walker and little daugh ter, Primrose, returned to Cross Hill last week after an extended visit to the Lone Star state. He says Texas for Texans but no Texas for him. Misses Jnnie Kennedy, Muttie May Neville and Mr. Darby Fulton of Clin ton visited Misses Kate and Annie Austin last Thursday, Horace, Lie little son of Mr. und Mrs. :!. I.. McSwain, is ipiite sick with dlphl leria. Cotton is coming in right along? about bales sold here last week. Persons who sold sometime ago for less til in 12 Cts are pretty sick of it. Kelley of Clinton, this county, died at his home on the 17th of August last. He served gallantly in the war of the sixties as a member of Co. I). 3rd S. C. battalion lufautry, Kershaw's brigade. He was severely wounded at the sanguinary battle of Uoonsboro. (South Mountain) on the 14th day of September, 1862, and left in the hands of the Federals. He was in prison for several months before he was discharged. It will be remem bered that it was in this battle that the gallant George James, command ing the battalion, was killed and that the battalion was cut to pieces. For the last four or five years. Mr. Kelley had been a sufferer from bis wounds. During this period lie had been to the hospital for treatment. His wounds hastened his death. He was in his 7Stb year and leaves a widow.
