Quite a num ber of citizens gathered at the homo of Mr. .lohn I). OwingS Wednesday night to congratulate him on his successful race for sheriff. Mr. J. E. Owings, who extended his thanks to the crowd and to the peo ple of I.aureus county for the support given him and for the kindness shown him in his race; he hoped to be able to serve them as the sheriff of I.aureus county in a manner which would never cause regret for the confidence placed in him. Mayor.I. N. Leak was then called on to address the crowd and in a few words related the clean campaign which Mr. Owings had conducted and, extended the best wishes of the town to Mr. and Mrs. Owings. We regret very much to see M,r. and Mrs. Owings leave our town but our loss is Laurens* and Laurens county's gain. Willis & Curry have just opened up a fancy grocery store on Main street near the depot. Mr. ti. E. Moore is opening up a gen eral merchandise line in the Babb build ing. Tho bank building is being pushed with gratifying rapidity; the walls are now above the first story. Mr. Cray hopes to be able to open for business by the first of (ictobcr. Mrs. John I.. Power, an aged lady of the Barksdale section, died at the home of Mrs. Eveline Power Thursday night and was laid to rest in New Harmony burying ground Friday afternoon at four o'clock, the funeral service being con dueled by Rev. Diamond Prices Will not be Lower The public has been led to believe through newspaper reports that the price of Diamonds will be lower. 97 per cent of the Diamonds mined are in the hands of two corporations the Dee Beers and the Premier Mining companies. The products of these two companies are sold through the London Rough Diamond Syndicate. The finan cial standing of this syndicate is beyond question. It stands pledged to maintain the price of Diamonds as it did during the panic of 1893 and 1894, also during the depression of 1903 and 1904; so the price of Diamonds Will not be Lower Fleming Bros.
