MAIL FACILITIES OF TWO CITIES. Interesting Conference Held In Colunv bia?-Visit of Laurens Delegation Promises Results. Columbia, through the Chamber of Commerce committee on mail facilities, is going right after the postoffice au thorities for needed changes. A meet ing was held yesterday at which Post master Ensor was present and the en tire mail connections of the city were gono over. The second assistant post master general will be written at once concerning the mail service on the af ternoon train between Columbia and Laurens on the Columbia, Newberry and Laurens road. The postal authori ties have not yet notified President Childs of that road when they want the service to begin, and although the ser vice was authorized some time ago, it has not yet gone into effect. Along with the mail service between Columbia and Laurens, the people of the latter city want some changes in the schedules in order that they can get the mail early in the morning. A delegation came down from Laurens . yesterday and appeared before Presi dent Childs, asking him to change the schedule of the train leaving here at 1 a. m. so that it would leave here at 4 a. m. This train will be a mixed one as at present, but arrangements will be made for handling the early papers for the subscribers. A petition along this line was also presented to the Chamber of Commerce committee and that com mittee has endorsed the request.?The State, 19th inst. The Committee referred to consisted of N. B. Dial. Dr. IL K. Aiken, M. J. Owings and Dr. W. H. Dial, and R. A. Cooper. These gentlemen, working for the benefit of this community, made as strorj a presentation of their cause as could be done and received the assurances of President Childs, the 'State Company and the Colum bia Chamber of Commerce that relief would be given us. President Childs agreed that the mail facil ities of Laurens were the poorest of any town of its size in the State and that he was ready at all times to assist the city of Laurens. The agitation must be kept up until something is done. Let everyone help. Keep talking. Mr. Childs Agrees to Hold Train. In speaking of the conference be tween himself and the representatives from Laurens which took place on Wednesday, Mr. Childs said that he had agreed to delay the freight train leaving here at 1 o'clock at night until 4 o'clock provided that the officials of the Charleston and Western Carolina! would change the schedule of the freight t train on their road to Greenville so that the train from Columbia would connect with it at Laurens as at present. This committee which represents the Chamber of Commerce, the city coun cil ami the business men of Laurens after the conference with Mr. Childs took up the matter of holding the trains on the Charleston and Western Carolina with Mr. G. G. Lynch, tho superintendent of the system, and the result is pending for his reply. The people of Laurens want an early morning train and have evidently reached that point where they are go ing to have it if it is possible. At pres ent all of the mails arrive and depart at the same time once each day and 24 hours intenvene between times.- The State, 20th inst. STATE NEWS.
