Whiskey, or No Whiskey, Wnlch? Editor ok The Advertiser: Tho whiskey question is being agitated as never before, not only in South Carolina, but throughout the entire un jAMratul wo find hum, good nun, of \ U Wil opinions. Some believe In hiKh li cenfte, some no license, some in the dis pensary, some in prohibition, some tem perance, some total abstinence, etc. But the question is not a financial, po litical or social one, but one of morals. The question is: Is it right or wrong to manufacture, sell or drink intoxicating liquors? I have no arguments, they have all been produced for and against; but let us go to the Book, tho Bible, and see what God says about this great moral question and his decision is final I and eternal. See Prov. 20:1. "Wine is B mocker, strong drink is raging; and whosoever is deceived thereby is not [ wise." Prov. 23:29-32. Who hath woe? Who bath sorrow? Who hath conten tions? Who bath babbling? Who hath wounds without cause? Who hath red ness of eyes? They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine. Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright; at the last it bitetb like a ser pent and stingeth like an adder." Isaiah 5:22-24. "Woe unto them that feye mighty to drink wine, and men of ? strength to mingle strong drink which justify the wicked for reward, and take away the righteousness of the righteous from him," etc. Haba. 2:15. "Woe un to him that giveth his neighbor drink, that puttest thy bottle to him, and] makest him drunken" etc. 1 Cor. 10.31 Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God." These strong words of God ought to forever settle the question with God's people; and there are many other pas sages like unto them. Brother, you that have been debat ing the question whether you will sign the petition or vote against whiskey, stop and ask yourself the question: Is this whiskey business right or| wrong? Does it contribute to the moral de velopment of our county? Does it help our churches? What help is it to our Orphanages | but to make orphans? Docs this business promote happi ness, joy and peace in our homes? Oh!| where is the help of this business to | our county? ^^Will not the Christian people of all ^denominations put their hearts together and pray that God may help us to see that which is right and under the lead ership of the Holy Spirit march on un til victory shall perch upon our banner | as we go. From and after the pas sage of this Ordinance it shall be un lawful for any person or persons to drink any Spirituous, Malt, Vinous, Fermented, Brewed, or other Liquor which contains Alcohol and is used as a beverage, on any street, highway, park, or public place within the incor l>orate limits, of the City of Laurens. Section 2. Any person found guilty of the violation of this Ordinance shall be fined in the sum of not less than Five Dollars, nor more than Fifty Dollars, or be imprisoned for a period of not less than Ten Days, nor more trvn Thirty Days, with or without the impo sition of hard labor. Ballew of Lisbon. Mrs. Thomas Downey is visiting her mother, Mrs. Medlock and other rela tives in the vicinity of Brewerton. Mr. Boyce Wolff of Alma spent a few days in the city during the week. He is a student at Clemson College. Misses Rosa and Hattie Davenport of Greenville are visiting Dr. and Mrs. C. L. Poole. Mrs. J. Z. I.everett and children are spending a few weeks at Hendersonville and Asheville. Mr. and Mrs. C. M. Babb visited relatives at Brogdon, Sumter county, during the past week. Mr. S. Diamond has returned from a two weeks business and pleasure trip to New York. Messrs. J. L. Langston and Rush Patterson visited the latter's father, Mr. W. J. Patterson, near Lanford on Sunday. v Mr. J. M. Blakely of Springfield, Orangeburg county, is spending a few weeks with his father, Mr. J. Warren Blakeley, near the city. Miss Mildred and Master Charles McKain of Due West after a week's visit to Miss Jennie and Master Sam uel Fleming returned home Thursday. Misses Cornelia and Amanda Charles of Greenville are visiting their cousins, Misses Gladys and Annie Huff on West Main Street. Dr. R. E. Hughes, who has been at his old home in Virginia since May, is expected to return to Laurens next week. This information is gladly re ceived by the doctor's Laurens friends who will be interested to know that he is greatly improved in health and has gained lf> pounds. Death of a Child. The friends and relatives throughout the county of Mr. Jas. B. Henderson, formerly of Mt. Gallagher, will regret to hear of the death of his infant son, Hugh Henderson, which occurred last Wednesday at Branchville, his home. Much sympathy is felt for Mr. and Mrs. Henderson in this sad bereavement. Marriage at Princeton. Mr. John M. Wood and Miss Mary J. McCuen were married at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. M. B. McCuen of Princeton, Wednesday afternoon, July 19th. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Mike McGhee of Honea Path. One Dollar Saved Represents Ten Dol lars Earned. The average man does not save to exceed ten per cent of his earnings. He must spend nine dollars in living ex penses for every dollar saved. Kennedy, popular and well known young people of Greenville were mar ried in this city Wednesday evening last, the ceremony being performed by Rev. J. D. Pitts at the home of Mr. J. S. Bennett, uncle of the bride. Mrs. Kennedy is a daughter of Mr. A. L. Adams and is quite a favorite in Laurens, where she frequently visits. The groom, a native of Boston, Mass., is a traveling salesman for an Atlanta supply house and has resided in Green ville for some time. HIDDEN DANGERS. Your eommittee appointed to draft and submit a memorial of our deceased brother, G. W. Monroe, beg leavo to report: That the grea? father of the universe having again visited us for the purjwse of calling one of our brothers from the scenes of his earthly labors, the choice fell upon Brother G. W. Monroe, one who labored long and faithfully among us. Being ripe in years and physically infirm for some years past, he could not be as punctuul in his attendance upon our regular meetings as he would have liked, but in heart und spirit he was ever with us. Brother Monroe was in his sixty-sixth year at the time of his death, which oc curred on the 7th day of May, 1905. Was buried on the day following in the cemetery at Laurens, S. C, with Ma sonic honors. Brother Monroe was faithful in all the relations of life; to his county and State as a citizen and as a soldier; to his family as a husband and a father; to his neighbors as a friend ever kind and considerate. He was modest and unassuming in the performance of every duty as he saw it. Therefore be it r solved? 1st: That in th death of Brother G. W. Monroe, Palmetto Lodge, No. 19, A. F. M., has lost a true and faithful member; one who ever kept the tenets of the Order in his heart; who had faith in God, hope of a glorious immor tality, and charity for all mankind. 2nd. That though we as members of this Lodge have consigned his body to the dust, and his spirit, to the God who gave it, yet we will ever cherish his memory in our hearts. 3rd. That we tender our sympathy, both as a Lodge and individually, to his bereaved family. 4th. That a page in our Minute book be inscribed to his memory and a copy of these resolutions, suitably engrossed, be furnished the family. John M. Hudgens, T. B. Crews, W. C. Irby, Sr. Committee. The committee to whom it was re ferred to prepare a tribute to the mem ory of our deceased brother, S. K. Tay lor, beg leave to submit the following: Whereas, the Supreme Architect of the universe has removed our brother, S. K. Taylor, from the Mosaic pave ment in the Temple below to the blaz ing star in the Temple above; and Whereas, the rough ashler has been fashioned into the perfect ashler, and translated by the Great Architect in furtherance of the plans and designs laid down upon the trestle-board of Fate; and Whereas, our departed brother, in his intercourse with his fellow-men, ever met them on the level, worked by the plumb, and parted on the square. Therefore, be it resolved 1st. That in the death of our brother, S. K. Taylor, Palmetto Lodge, No. 19, A. F. M., has sustained a serious and a lasting loss. 2d. That while we sorrow for the loss of our brother, we bow in humble submission to the will of the Great De signer. 3rd. That a page in our Minute book be dedicated to the memory of our de parted brother. 4th. That on and after the passage of this Ordinance it shall be unlawful for any person or persons to play at or in any tavern inn, hotel, store, or in any house used as a place of gaming, barn, stable kitchen, office, bank, barber shop, dwelling houso, or in any other house of whatsoever kind, or in any street, highway, open woods or field, or other place within the corporate limits of the City of Lau rens. at any game or games with cards or dice or any gaming table, commonly called A. B. C, or E. O., or gaming table known or distinguished by any other letter or figures, or by any other name, or roley holey, or any vogue et noir, or any faro hank, or any other bank or table of the same or like kind under any denomination whatever, or any game or games, of billiards, pool, bowls, backgammon, chess, whist or drafts on the Sabbath Day, commonly called The Lord's Day. Z. 2. Any person or porsons violating any of the provisions of this ordinance shall, on conviction, be sentenced i<> pay a fine of not less than Five Dollars nor more than Fifty Dollars, or be im prisoned for a period of not less than Ten Days, nor more than Thirty Days.
