Fire at Union,
A .'erio is lire occurred at Union lust
Wednesday. The value of the property
destroyed is summed up at $44,000 00
with an average insurance of about one
half. In Hio main the lire was cos -
lined to the business portion of the
city in what Is called "East Union."
There were two residences burned.
The lire originated in the wood
workiug departmontof the Bailey Lum
ber and Manufacturing Company.
Spartanburg was appealed to and

Col. D. K. Norris is Dead.
Col. D. K. Norris of Anderson county
died at John Hopkins Hospital In Balti
more on the L'iird inst. Ho had been in
bad health for sonio time and hid gone
there lor treatment.
Col. Norris was a successful busi
ness man and a leading farmer and had
always taken an active part In all
farmers movemen's He had been ac
tive in State politics for a t u nber of
years.
Ho was at one time a candidate for
Congress, but was d-.-f fated by Col.
George Johnstone of Newherry .
At the time of bta death ho was a
member of the Boat! of Trustees of
Clcmson Co'lege.

January 2tth, tho question of increas
ing the capital stock of tho Hank was
discussed. Tho Bou;d of Directors

pediency of Increasing same and if
they thought advisable to call a meet
ing of the stockholders to vot'j upon
tho measure. The direct rs propOSQ an
increase of $25,000 and a mooting of
the stockholders will be called at an
early date to vote on tho proposition.
If the increase is voted the capital
stock of the Ban a will then bo $75,000.
The management of the Sank is par
ticularly attractive to tho pooplu of
Laurens county and the new stock
will probably nearly all be taken by
