Preparatory to letting the contract for grading and macadamising Main Street between the railroad crossing near the depot and the over head bridge at Mr. Talbert's residence, the city bad submitted to it two bids. One was from Gallagher & Bramiett at 32 cents and one was from J. T. Blassen game at 31 oenti. Both bids were sub mitted with specifications In writing. O., on Saturday, April 30th and began work on Tuesday, May 3rd. Subsequently ho was pr^- nted witli a copy of a contract for hi., igna ture, which he refused to sign on the ground that the terms were not in ac cordance with his bid and served the city with notloo that he was ready for material that was to be furnished him. On Monday evening Blassengatne was notified by Council, through Mayor Gray that he must discontinue work or sign contract. Tuesday morning he began work as usual with his entire force, when he was promptly arrested together with his foreman and 33 la borers. The case was called at 9 A. M. The Mayor, C. E. Gray stated that the city bad no disposition to deal harshly with tl ? Defendants, and in as much as there were different conten tions on the part of the city and Mr. Blassengame he would dismiss the case; if work was resumed without the con tract being signed that they would be dealt with in a harsh manner. Bla9sangeme will bring an action for damages against the city for breach of contract. R. V. D. Carriers Examined. A competitive examination was held in the Court House on Saturday for positions as It. V. D. earriers over the following routes: Gray Court, Mount vllle, Cross Hill and Clinton. Adalr died at his homo, four miles East of Clinton, at 11:30 a. m., on Sunday. Mr. Adair was 72 years "of age and was a Confederate Veteran, having served in Company A. 8rd 8. C. regiment. He leaves a widow and six children. The burial took place atSardls Church on Monday. What Laurens Will Get. Lamb, color bearer of Rrd S. C. Regiment was found dead in his oha<r> this morning He attended memorial exercises in tho Courthouse yesterday, and on motion of Col. T. B. Crews, waved the battle flag of the Regiment three times while the veteraas gave the "rebel yell." Sergeant Lamb had suffered from heart trouble for several years and that is thought to have been the cause of bis death. Mr. Pitts is a breeder of thor ough bred ehickons and talked inter estingly for half an hour about his ups and downs in tho chicken raising busi ness. The breeding of chickens is a sido issue with him, but ho has thirty grown hens, which ho raises from, and et n't supply the demand for his chick ens. Mr. Pitts states that he hasn't a grown fowl in his yard that ho would sell for three dollars Death of Mrs. B. L. Lipford. Mrs. B. L Lipford died at eight, thirty on yesterday nnrning at her home uoar Ware Shoals, after an ill ness of about ten days. Mrs. Lipford was a Miss Simmons aud a bister of Mr. H. Y. Simmons of Gray Court. Her husband and (Ivo children are left in great sorrow by her death. (<ala D;iy at Jones High School. Mrs. John Hamilton Die in Laurens. Mrs. John Hamilton of TCkom died at the home of her brother, Mr. R. P. Milam in this city at seven o'clock Saturday evening. Mrs. Hamilton had not been well for somo time and came to Laurens on Thursday to visit Mr. and Mrs Milam, but she rapidly grew worse Instead of being benelitted by the change. The burial took place at Union Church, nrar her home on Sun d >y afternoon. Jones of the City Schools tendered his resignation to the trustees a few days ago to take effect at the end of the present session. The board of trustees met on last Thursday to act on tho resignation with the result that the body doclined to accept tho resignation and unanim ously re-elected him. Tho trustees and patrons of the school generally are very anxious for Mr. Jones to recon sider his decision. He hns done much to build up the splendid system of schools which tho town enjoys and his work is highly appreciated. It is said that Mr. Jones will give up school work all together and go into some other lino of business but ho has not announced his future plans.
