THE OL? RELIABLE Absolutely S^ure THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE VERDICT WAS A STRANGE ONE. Why Was He Not Ac quitted? IS MURDER CRIME? White Man May Be Pun ished. To Bo Sure Ho Killed His Wife But Then tho Newspapers "Lied" on HI in. At 8 o'olock Wednesday evening af ter a hard-fought trial of three days, Henry Patrlok was convioted of mur der at Bennottsville, S. C. He will not hing, however, as the jury recom mended him to the nnrcy of the court, which fixes tho penalty at life impri sonment. Patrick is the man who killed his wife just a month ago tonight. He did not employ oounsel and the court ap pointed Messrs. D. D. McOoll, Jr., and J. W. Li9Grand to undertake the de fense They made an earnest and zealous Sight for their client, leaving r.o stone unturned, and succeeded in s wing his nock. Monday morning these young gen tlemen made an effort to have the trial pos'ponod on tho ground that the pub lic had been unduly wrought up and prejudiced by newspaper articles about the homicide published in Tho State, Tho News and Courier and The Pee Dee Advocate. Several affidavits were read in which the doponents said that It would be difficult for Patrick to got a f ilr trial at tins term of court, and the correspondents of the papers men tioned were severely arraigned by counsel and charged with deliberately attempting to prejudice the public against Patrick. Judgo Gary over ruled the motion and the trial was proceeded with. The first point gained by the defense was the exclusion of tho testimony of Patrick's 0-yoar-old daughter, little Annie May, who Is the only known eye witness to tho tragedy. Hhe was hold to ba incompetent because .-he did not understand tho nature of God, heaven, hell and the devil. Annie May swore at the coroner's inquest that her fa ther cursed her mother with mfuy vile oaths and then shot her while she was saying, "Take that gun away;" Patrick swore that the shoot'ng was accidental. He said ho was loading If s gun and It went off. His wife, he said, was sitting on the eJ*oof tho bed fac ing him. He grabbed her and laid her on tho bad and then went out, never seeing her again. As a matter of fact, Mrs. Patrick's body was found in an adjoining room, lying la a pool of blood, with six cuts on her throat and a gunshot wound In tho side of her neck which severed the spinal column and caused instant death No effort was made by the defense to explaiu the cuts nor how the dead body got out of the room whore the shooting occurred. Both of Patrick's bands and sleeves wero bloody when arrested, about two hours after the homicido. Ho was then io a drunken stupor. He said he drank liquor to kill his trouble. Next morning Patrick told several persons that he did hot know anything about tho tragedy. Later in the day ho gave the accident story. The jury was in the room an hour and a ha'f before rende ring the ver dict. Many Mothers of a Like Opinion. Mrs. Pilmer, of Cordova, Iowa, says: "One of my children was subject to croup cf a severe typ?, and the giving of Chamberlain's Remedy promptly, always brought relief. Many mothers in this neighborhood think the same as I do about this remedy and want no other kind for their children." For sale by Laurens Drug Co. Our New Discovery is sold by W. W. The Piedmont Havings and Invest ment Company will enable you to do this. Instead of Paying Rent for years and owning nothing at the end of the term the property is yours, Meanwhile, you have had the home from the first?with the motive to im prove it. Owning one's home does more to jako an independent man than any thing else. A man with little or no property finds it hard to borrow and build. .-'ich men this oompany provides credit for. Thero are hundreds of working men in this town paying rent on houses that are not cosy and comforta Me, they have n > conveniences, that are not kept np and that are not im P'oving in value. Loti in Laurens are cheap. Three same men, with the rent money they are paying, can all own homes in which they will take p?ldo and which will prow more valuable each year. The Piedmont Savings and Invest ment Company is not a building and lean association. Why? Because tho contract is certain and definite. The borrower knows to a day when his deht will be due. Moreover the rate of Interest is lower. *T. W. BALL imd M. f.. C#st*m afcrs 899888 AMONG OUR FRIENDS. Mies Porober of Minneapolis is the 1 guest of Mrs. Alex Long.
