Editok, The Advertiser, Sir: I am sitting in a nice, quiet, comfortable room on North 7th street In a small town iu the Northwestern part of In dian Territory by the name of Okee n.ih. There is enough snow on tbe ground to keep the people indoors and my belog here in these circumstances I deoided to write Tue Advertiser a letter. Now I will make an attempt to give you a brief description o( this place,? for there is q<>ite a contrast between it aud Laurens county, South Carolina and this is the beat country of the two That Is, I mean to say, the opportuni ties I think are better for a man that wants to get a start on the road of suc cess. Of course South Carolina is the grandest State, with the most noble poo ple on earth and a man that could not say that about his pativo State would be too sorry to mention. But the oppor tunities that aro offered to a man in Indian Territory now look good to mo. Of course this country is only in its In fancy now. But we have land here that will produce anything that the climate allows. Howover, thoro is litt'e of it in a state of cultivation. But the In dians are leasing to the white man on reasonably terms and thousands of good prairie land will go into corn and cot ton fields in tbe next 5 years. I am in a small town about seven months old, without a railroad. The population of thisplaoe from a census taken last wook was 1,045 and people ooming every day from all parts of tho country. We aro contemplating two railroads sometime In the near future. One known as tho Fort Smith and Western Railroad Com pany will have their road through here by the time grass comes in the spring aud when they both got hero I think we will have one of the best towns lo cated in the Creek Nation, Indian Ter ritory. I am with the Okeenah Gin, Oil and Milling Company. Wo have put up over 700 bales of cotton the past season and still ginning, and where it comes from, judging from tho amount of land you see In cultivation is a mys tery. But it is nothing rai\3 to seo a man In the Territory haul his produce from 15 to 40 miles to market. I heard a good, substantial planter I know to make the following statement: That bo planted 28t acres of cotton on his farm last year and has sold up to this date J2.281.02 worth of cotton on it. Say? that's enough to make a sorry man feel as If he was full of business. But be fore I get called down by some of those old acquaintances of mine out about Chestnut Bldge I had bettor stop, hop ing to see some of you a*, the re-union in New Orlears in May, wherj we can all have a jolly good time for old times sake. A NERVOUS DISEASE. Its Many Causes and How to Treat It. Mouldy Food? Dad Weather aud Uu ' cleanly Surroundings Uxualfy Responsible Tor It. Dr. Nesom, the state veterinarian, of Olemsou, has written the letter printed below on the subject of '?stag gers" among horses. It will bo read with interest by Laurens farmers: As it is quite out of the question to give personal answers to all of the let ters received from citizens of South Carolina and Georgia regarding a horee disease commonly referred to as stsggere, I tako this method of say ing to those o. ncerned that more and more caseB appear every week, ar d just at a season when horses and mules are so much in demand for farm work it becomes a serious question. The losses in South Carolina from this disease during the past year are ostimated at about $10,000, and it is prevalent in Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina and Kansas. I had diagnosed tho dis ease as cerebro-eplnal meningetis noarly a year ago, but many of the cases did not seem typical of this dis ease. I have recently forwarded to the bureau of animal industry at Washing ton six of the brains taken from horses that had died of this disease. A par tial roport has been received and the di3ca8o proves to be cerebro-splnnl meningetis, or leucoencephalitis. This Is a disease of the nervous sys tem, affecting chiefly tho brain and its covering membranes. Most of the brains taken out recently hnve been congested, some bled 6erum around the brain, and over the right or left half of tne upper portion of tho brain (cerebrum) there has been found a large area of degeneration. This can nob be seen on the surface, but if the brain be cut open what appears to be a large ulcer Is found in the substance of tho brain. This is the prinoipal le6 slon and Is responsible for most ofjthe 111 symptoms. The symptoms aro those of noarly all other forms of so-called "stag gers," and death eenerally follows In ono or two days If not very soon after tho disease is noticed. The cause of the disease is not well understood, but Is always associated with mouldy food, bad waior and unclean surroundings. The remedy is to avoid the causes, use only the best food, pure water and keep the animals under the best con ditions as to cleanliness. In one case I saw where a numb r of mules died, the only bad environment I could find was that a lot of rank weeds had been mowed down around the barn and left to decay during a rainy spell of weather. Medical treatment is almost useless, as the lesions of the brain have already occurred when tho symptoms are no ticed aud cure is generally out of tho question whon so much of the brain has become decayed. Cold shower baths of tho head, doses of one ounce of chloral hydrate, one ounce aloes, or four ounces of whiskey, may relieve the symptoms for awhile. When the disease appears clean, dis infect and whitewash the barn, and do not use a stall where a horse has dUd. If possible abandon lots and barns for two or three months and provide quar ters elsewhere for all horses kept on tho place. G. E. Nesom, State Veterinarian. Cures Cancer and Blood Folson.
