Laurens people will again have a se
ries o( excellent entertainments and
lectures this winter under the auspices
of the Laurens Lyceum association.
A sufficient number of gentleman
have pledged themselves to support
the court e to make it a certainty and
the bookings have been mado but it is
urged that others subscribe. It should
be borne in mind that this is not a
money-making scheme, that the ob
joct is to elevate and educate and at
tbo same time entertain the people
and every person who possibly can
should aid it. The cost of a subscrip
tion is very little?and good citizens
who have the welfare of tho town at
heart ought not erudgo that assistance.
October 10, Prof. B. Benjamin An
drews, former president of Brown Uni
versity and one of the most celebrated
men on the lecture platform will open
the season. Prof. Andtows is a learned
and eloquent man aud, moreover,
among Northern men, few of great
station in life have boen so fair and
generous in handling Southern ques
tions. H s subject will be Robert E.
Lee and it ought to attract a great au
dience from the city and all over the
county as well. It will do the heart of
every true friend of the South good to
to hoar this lecture from a brilliant
and earnest Northern student.
December 5, E. L. Barker, the mono
logulst will be here, to be followed on
the 27th, by L. F. Coneland, the great
humorist. On January 27th the Dun
bar Handbell Bingers will be the at
traction. The last featuro and one of
the best of the program will be the
Chicago Glee Club on the 6th of May

BEATH OF MRS. LASSITEB.
Beloved Young Woman Passes Away iu
Texas?Body Brought Hero.
Mrs. J. H. Lasslter, who was Miss
Gona Shell, died at her homo in Texas
last Thursday and her . body was
brought hero and interred in tho City
Cemetery Sunday afternoon, Kev. J.
D, Pitts, conducting the funeral ser
vices.
Mrs. LassitOr was the only daughter
of the late J. Warren Shell and Mrs.
Shell. About one year ago she was
married in Texas. .She was brought up
here and was greatly beloved by a
large circle of friends and kindred in
the city and county. Sho was about 20
years old. Her mother and husband
and several brothers survive her, for
whom great sympathy is felt hero.
BIO FAIR IN CHARLOTTE.
Promises to he tho Most Successful

What, promises to be tho biggest and
most successful Agricultural Fair and
Race Meet in the history of North Car
olina, will be held in Charlotte on Sep
tember 30th and October 1st, 2nd and
3rd. Everything will be on a big
scale, in keeping with tho reputation
of the progressive city of Charlotte.
The fair grounds, buildings and race
track are well arranged and elegantly
appointed and can bo easily reached
by a double electric car line which will
land visitors at the gates. All the rail
roads will otter greatly reduced rates.
The Fair Association will distribute
a number of valuable and useful pres
ents among excursionists and other
visitors. On Tuesday, September 30th,
a $26.00 set of harness, donated by the
Shaw Harness Company, will be given
away. Oh Wednesday, October 1st, the
present will be an elegant Gas Stove,

organ from the store of tho Andrews

given away on Thursday. On Friday,
tho last day of the Fair, a standard

tions a man can ill afford to wait till he
gets cool to enter protest. I have been
disfranoised without the color of tho
Ethiopian or the stripe of the convict.
It may be reckoned a sad commentary
on our political machinery to admit it
but it crept upon us at last. 'We have
heard much about the dangers of the
Innovations of politics for the last ten
years, of how a pendulum being' swung
too far in one direction will by force of
gravity inevitably swing too far to the
other extreme sooner or later. But I
had little dreamed of Bleeping idly on
the precipice of disfranchiseinent only
to be walloped so soon beneath its lash
ing waves, it's bad. it's terrible just to
think of so many clever men, brilliant
and sound, one would like to vote for,
and so many more hi- would like ever so
much to vote against and then all of a
sudden wake up and And himself all dis
franchised ? a grown man, free and
white, w ithout the stigma of stripe or
color, squarely set down on and de
prived the privilege the constitution
guarantees to every citizen of the com
monwealth. Vet all this happens in
this great, free, fourth-of-July country
of OUrs,?a country of the white, the
brave and the free. Gentlemen, it's
terrible! I had my ticket made out. I
had given much thought to the prepara
tion of it and much-. 1 had like to
have said much prayer, but I didn't.
(By the way, I'm afraid our prayers
along this line are too few, too short,
too superficial and altogether perfunc
tory. It might be interesting to take a
hand primary over the county some
time to see how many voters actually
pray earnestly and deep for wisdom to
guide in the dispensation of suffrage ?
especially of years when 1 happen to
run. But this is a parenthesis.)
No, I didn't loose over much training
along this line, but will say that what
ever of effort put forth by way of pre
liminary preparation was ail snowed
under on the 26th ult.. when I was not
allowed to cast my vote at the primary.

only say I didn't get to vote and feel
mighty like a fellow who has been de
prived of casting his vote for men ho
wanted to elect, and against men he
ever-so-nnich wanted to defeat. It is
only one yoter to-be-sure, ' ?? the ques
tion suggests itself, Whop ve matters

tlemen, on last Tuesday rnj blood boiled
hot and thero poured through my pores

so short a time In all my life. I was hot

It's terrible, I say to be disfranchised
as 1 havs been. May none of the read
ers of this epistle ever reach such hu
miliation, it was not a mat ter of en
rollment at all: it was a matter of roll*
ment. Just after leaving homo for the
election precinct I was stricken with a
spell of Renal Colic. Returning home
1 began to grunt and roll and when the
Madam put nu. in a tub of hot water I
got better but that fs what made mo so
awful hot, and that is what made me
sweat so, and that is how 1 was disfran
chised, ft's terrible.

Whereas, a written petition of one
third of tho electors and like propor
tion of the free-holdors of tho age of
twenty-one years, residing in school
district, No. 2, Youngs township, Lau
rens county, has been filed with the
county board of education of said
county, asking that an annual tax of
three mills bo levied on and collected
on property in said district to supple
ment the funds of said district. It is

That the board of trustees of said
school district shall hold an election at
Youngs' Store in said district on the
18th day of September, A. D., for tho
purpose of deciding if said tax shall bo
levied and .collected.
At said election only such electors as
roturn real or personal property for
taxation and who exhibit their tax re
ceipts and registration certificates as
required in general o'.eetlons, shall be
allowed to vote.
At said election tho said board of
trustees shall act as managers and the
election shall be conducted as provided
