With commendable enterprise that paper publishes a re port from its special correspondents on Wednesday last, from almost every county in the State touching the proba ble acreage in cotton for this year.? Summing up, its conclusions are, that ? the reduction in acreage will not be large, while the falling off in the use ? pf fertilizers will be great. This is not encouraging. It simply means no large increase in food oropsand a diminished crop of cotton. Thin is not the desid eratum. What we want in South Carolina is not so much a reduction of the cotton crop as an inorease of the food crops?for man and beast. We must buy less, it is conceded that, we ' here in South Carolina, aro proemen ontly an agricultural people. Wo may be unable to compel the outside world to give us big prices for our produota, but one thing is oertaln; we can pro r- duce our bread and meat/and thus be come entirely independent, and snap our fingers at the foreigner. It is all very beautiful to produce cotton at ten cents per pound, and have broad acres, and fill our pockets with silver and greenbacks, bat when the crop goes up to ten million bales, then down goes the price to five cents. We are aware fthat a large per oentof tho farmers are poor people; many of them tenants and making their orops upon credit ob tained from the merchants and banks upon a basis of cotton planted; theso, per force, must largely plant cotton to obtain credit. But there are thousands of farmers in Laurens county out of BKe"o*tvuhd ?fttdopondent. * Ol_ four_ihou eand farmers intEe "county half of them are independent of bankers and merchants and masters of themselves and conditions. They should be more so. Let their food orops be doubly in creased in the future. Now is the time. Seize the day. A market will be found at homo. If not at home create one at home. At the present it is humiliating to have to depend upon India, China, Japan and South America for a mar ket. When our own cotton is spun here and made ready into fashionable out gowns; when cattle, sheep and goats are grown here, their flesh con sumed here and their skins tanned and converted here, population will be at tracted, towns and country will teem with hundreds of thousands of people and tho cry of poverty and hard times will cease. Raise your own bread and meat. As wo have said, thousands of well-to-do can do so. It will make them a hundred fold richer and more inde pendent. A wise man has said; "neither lender nor a borrower be;'1 the inspired book reads: "owe no man anything."? Raise more corn and mea W n you need and all the cotton you can. Set your house In order not to die but to live. Let the other fellow plant from Dan to Beersheba in cotton but do you have fat cribs and smoke houses. ? ? ? Governor Evans disported last week among the barbarians of Georgia. He . visited Atlanta, taking notes of the prospect for the Groat Exposition this fall. He was looking out for wide space for the groat display our Stato is to make. Governor Evans was enter tained by tho Gridiron Club, or some thing of that sort. It Is encouraging to have our great men oiroulating around and innoculating the country with wholesome and healthy views of social and political policies. How charming to. contemplate a "chemically pure" political atmosphere in Georgia and surrounding bailiwicks in the near fu ture! And to trace the reform to Our own benign influence over the heath en! Judge Earle warns Kohn, Reporter of the News and Courier, to be careful in his reports of the pearls that drop from the lips of the anointed in this State.
