' He proposes to lie South Carolina's noxt Governor. In au Interview pub lished on the first page of your last weck? issue ho sayB: 'Tarn a Democrat, and in ontiro sympathy with tho Dom oeratio platform as adopted by tho party in convention assembled in Chi cago, of which convontion I was a member." Tho latter olauso I supposo is truo; but Is the llrst part truo? Is ho a Democrat? Lot us moasuro him by his own words. In tho noxt sen tence immediately following ho says: "I boliovo In tho freo coiuago of silver at tho ratio of 10 to 1." In this alono without more, ho puts himsolf outsido of the Chicago platform. Wo will just quote enough from that papor to show no is not on it, viz: "Wo hold to tho use of both gold and silvor as tho standard money of the country, and to tho coinage of both gold and Bilvor without discrimination against eithor motal or chargo for mintugo, but tho dollar unit of coinage ot both metals must bo of equal intrinsic and ex changeable valuo, or bo udjustod through international ngrocmont, or by such safeguards of legislation as shall insure tho maiutenanco of tho parity of tho two metals, and the equal powor of ovory dollar at all times in tho markets and in tho payment of debts; and wo demand that all paper currency shall bo kept at par with and payablo in sueh coins. Wo insist upon this pol icy as especially necessary for tho pro tection of tho farmers and laboring classes, tho lirst and most defencoloss victims of an unstablo money und a iluetuating currency." Thus Bpoko tho Democratic party of tho whole Unitod States "in convontion nsscmblod in Chicago." And thus speaks Mr. Evans tho prospective Governor of South Carolina. Is ho a Democrat? Again ho says: "I boloivo in freo trado." Now freo trado means, direct taxation to moot tho expenses of tho gonoral govornmentand to pay interest on tho public debt; and, ex necessitate roi, an army of tax gathorcrs invading tho country from Maine to Texas, and from tho Carolinas to Callifornia to colloct it; thereby giving up to tho moles and bats all tho eustom houses with their furniture which lino our vast oxtont of sea coasts and harbors and adorn many of our intorior cities, costing for thofr erection and furnish ing more millions of dollars than could bo collected dlroetly from tho pockets of tho peoplo in soveral years. Wheroas tho Democratic party is com mitted to a tariff for rovenue sufficient to meet all tho oxponscs of tho govern ment eeonomieally administered. Is Mr. Evans a Domocrat? Ho is pledged to the Ocala platform of the populist party, whoso members in Congress act with tho Republicans in defeating or rendering less etToetivc all measures of tho Democratic party to roform the tariff and make it less burdensome to tho peoplo. Is Mr. Fvans a Democrat? Ho says, "I believe in free trade," and yot ho eondomns Mr. Cleveland and tho Dornocratie party in Congress becauso cortain raw mateVial, wool for instance, which every man, woman and child must wear whether cheap or dear, arc to bo admitted into our country duty freo. Freo wool means cheaper garments of wool, and cheaper blankots of wool, and cheaper everything in which wool is used. Is Mr. Evans con sistent? Ho advocates sectionalism by an al liance of tho South with tho West against Democrats of tho North and Fast. Tho former is tho hot bod of Populism and havo always boon our bittorost political enemies, while the latter woro our lriends and stood liko a break water between the South and destructive legislation advocated aipl pressed by extromo fanatics from the West who would havo overwhelmed ny, but for truo mon from tho section whiOh ho now condemns. Where are tue Western Democrats who hold views in common with Mr. Evans? I havo seen tho utterance of none of his politi ? il faith. He stands on Mr. Tillman's platform, and both when tried by tho truo standard of Democracy of which Mr. Clovoland is the head and loader, are not entitled to bear the name. Vbritas.
