LAURENS, B.C., Aug. 21, 1894. Note? of I he State Suggest f ok Convention. John Gary Evans, of A ikon county, ~~W?a suggestod as the candidato of tho R ^formers for tho office of Governor. Dr. W. H. Timmorman was suggested for Lieutonant-Governor. A majority of tho Convention favored naming an all around ticket, but Gov. Tillman laid down Ihe law otherwise. The op position to Evans turned tho other oheok and voted tho "suggostion" unanimous. The Hon. W. D. Evans, movod as tho Platform of tho Rofor mors in this Stato tho Ocala Platform whioh went down with a hurrah. Ono Slattery, of Charleston, wantod a Hag to voto undor or fight under (not sot tied) and it was donicd him. He should have had his flag. A Charles ton Reformer was mado temporary chairman and a Collcton man perma nent ohairman. Tt is not necossary to name them here as most of Thk Ad vertiser readers do not keep scrap books. - "'MrT'Evans mado a spooch, which was much applauded. It is to bo hopod that tho speech was imporfoctly re ported, as it may bo road and thon tho reader will rise from tho reading and ho can with littlo difficulty dlgost tho male-rial of the spooch. Wc trust there is moro in the aspiring gentleman than this forensic effort indicates. Dr. Tim merman was brought forward and mado a modest littlo talk promising to hold up Mr. Evans' hands. Thon all was done. Thon Gov. Tillman was Intro duced with much enthusiasm. He promised to go to pastures now and green infested with a unicorn or uni corns and to carry his pitchforks shar pened. Evans is a young man and a lawyer. Timmerman ^Ja. a doctor of inc^^ni^nlSt^fkyfB. No signs of dis HUflVworo broathed; the opposing can didates taking their ohastisomcnt moekly undor tho majority rule. This is a country where tho majority can do its worst and the minority must Hing up its hat. Ellorbe, and Tindal, the de feated candidates, ..are farmers, plow boys and wool hats.. Peace to their ashos. Thus goes down tho curtain on tho second act of the groat South Carolina farce 6fj 1804. Tho Tariff. Tho ,Houso passed tho tariff bill as amended by tho Senate and the Bill ,,.has boon enrolled and is in tho President's hands. Ho has ton days to consider it and may approvo or voto and send it back with his objections. If ho fails to return it in ton days it be comes law. Tho democratic party, while riot gratified with it, must bo contont to be satisfied. All around it is conceded as an improvement on tho oxlstlng McKinley law. On many ar ticles of consumption and prime neces sity thoro is great reduction, notably woolens, it will go a groat way to koep tho democratic party In power. Cotton wont up ten points on tho announce ment of the passago of tho bill. The ending of tho great and prolonged struggle will itsolf restoro to business a healthy, normal condition and we may loqk to seo a steady improvement from this time-forward. About Voting. The rules require in tho coming oloctlon: , You ean voto without voting for tho ontlro string of ofllco3, to wit: You can voto for members of tho * legislature, but must vbto for three: but you can omit thoso and voto only for congressman or treasurer or any ?ethor office and no moro. If you voto for dologatos you must v ote for eight. You can voto for au ditor or for no other offieo and your voto will ho GQHnted and so on. Don't mistako. Gon. Parley withdraws from tho plumed field as a candidato for Con gress, to represent this, tho 4th Dis trict. In doing so ho fires a last shot?two colums and a half in length, but barmies-;, as ho makes good his rotroat and leavos tho Hold to tho foo In sorricd ranks. Paper bullets aro sure ly blank cartridges. Tho general's farewell shot Is in good tompor, show ing a Christian spirit, and ho is to bo oommended as ho turns his cheek to his friends, tho onomy. It is plbasant to comtomplato the Military arm of tho scrvlco in so Christian a spirit. The Gonoral st at es that he has boon "bossed" outof tho field by Irby, Gantt anl Wilson, which aggregation ho Ch iraet eri/.es as a ring. His card is addressed "To tho Public." This is a ml?Hroction cloarly, as lie has reform o 1 tho roformors and Is tho author of tho housohold that repudiates him, ac cording to Gon. Parley. Ho lays it all on Irby and oxcusos Tillman, and beg -that Tillman be not hold responsible. Among us descendants of tho En gtishors wo accept Warwick tho "King Maker" as a worthy Knight, a follow of infinite readinoss to fight, a fast Stander by of his fri nils, ono who took uaro of himself in tho while, appropri ating tho good ofiicoa, but finally dying en tho iield like a gamo cock, and loav ing his head on the pavement of St. Pauls, caring nothing. Farley parts from Reformers and appeals to t(>v pu b lio, as a kind of opistlo goneral to tho heathen. Wo aro bound to havo peaco now whon tho plumed Knight quotes uncl) "Remus" and sings a song of "Lot) Loo." Ho goes to join Sholl in tho thados of poace, and peaco to his ashes. Stato Liquor Commissioner Traxler, it is reported, talks of rosigning. Thoro is a pretty salary attached to the oiii cc and the Governor will bo able' fco fill tho vacancy whon it coinos. On ercules was imposed tho task of de stroying tho nydra with a hundred heads. As fast as tho hero knocked off ono head with his club two camel ut Anil rmihiced iL. I When a man Is woll ho can kick tho ] doctor out of tho door and throw physic to the dogs- When ho is sick and weak his spirit fails him and ho welcomes and holds out his appealing arms to the roller of bread pills. "The devil was sick, the dovil a saint would be, Tho dovil was woll, tho dovil a saint was ho." Some time since, not vory romoto, Tho State, The Advertiser, Wade Hampton, other journals In South Car olina, and Black of Pennsylvania, urged tho formation of domocratic clubs in this State. Tho advlco was ignored. Like Micawbor, wo havo waited for something to turn up. Something has turned up and wo aro spilled out and aro woefully in tho son p. The democracy is safo in every State oxcept South Carolina. It is too lato to talk oi or lay tho blame and fix tho responsibility. Wo must ac^ cept tho situation as wo now Und It und make tho bost of It. Tho machinery of tho domocracy in tho state has boon for four years in unfriendly hands. A minority composed of those who de nounce tho democratic platform, that minority manipulated*by a half dozen who dospiso tho traditions and history of tho State and determined to rulo or ruin, whllo they hold tho spoils of Office, havo by tho throat a hundred thousand white people?dominate their destiny. In the bosom of tho dominant clique were some thoughtful, conserva tive and woll moaning men, asEllorbe, Tindal, Marlboro, Evans and others, who saw tho danger of extromo moas uros and outrageous tyranny, but they too havo been unheeded and in tho conflict drivon to a corner. They will tamoly submit and pass under tho yoke. This is tho situation in brief. Thoro is a largo minority of conserva tive white democrats in tho State who would co-oporato in any roasonablo courso to rodoom tho Stato to tho dom ocracy and bring her round. But in our viow tho opportunity has passed. Between this and tho 28th of August officient cooporation could not bo sc curod. Tho white population of tho Stato aro to bo trusted and a proper ofTort should bo made to bring them to tako a dispassionate healthy viow of tho situation and to adopt a policy har monious with the Domocracy of tho country, and tho party of tholr fathers. But for tho prosont, in the omorgoncy that is upon us, what are tho Conserva tives to do? Wo are not assuming to advise, but wo speak our mind. Tho ] Greeks Buffered while Achilles sulked. Lot us make tho most of a bad situa tion. While our friends were making a Governor and Lieut. Governor thoy might as well havo named tho Stato ticket in full. It was miserably small to stop. But the leaders left the offices with sop as sop for their subordinates to name tho bonoficiarios. , If it satis fies thorn, which is all thoy want in tho promises wc perforce, must bo con tent. On the 28th of August wo should go to tho polls and vote for tho best men for all places, State and county. There will bo no harm in disfranchis ing ourselves to voto an opposition in November, for no substantial Demo cratic opposition can be organized. This is the best that wo can now see to do and wc givo those viows with mod esty, leaving every man to do his own thinking. In choosing men for the leg islature and for county offices, let busi ness qualifications and character govern. Wo aro sick and at deaths door and let us tuke the physic as prescribed by the doctors and supplied to hand. There is a live tournament going on in Charleston as to representing that anclontburg in the Legislature The aspirants for the two vacancies in the Senate and House aro double the usual quota. There has been a disposition on the part of tho Dominant olement to cut Charleston olT from the State and to leave her to herself as a sort of independent bailiwick; finding it im practicable tho Tlllmanitcs of the last Legislature turned her over to the ten dor mercies of tho Sea Island ncgroos. Sho seems now to bo anxious to take a hand in what is going on in tho State and will send good mon to tho Senate and House. Wo aro glad to soo this; If Joe Barnwcll comes to tho Senate there will bo at least one man of sense in that body. Tho good pooplo of Alkon nud Abbovlllo and Edgclield im maglno they aro tho State of South Car olina, with Marchant and Bob Hemp hill and tho handsomo Timmormnn, but when it comes to paying the tuxes of tho Stato and keeping up her credit, tho Maccdomian cry goes out to Char leston to como over and help us. It rojolcos tho hearts of good men in those hills to lind Charleston is still a part of what remains of the old State. It appears now: Talbcrt, of tho Edgoflold district has no opposition; Latlmcr of the Third, Ukowlso; Shell of the Fourth goes over into tho tumb ling billows of tho waves or whore cor taln ducks arc supposed to have gone, and wo trust Joo Johnson will succeed him: Murray, Gov. Tillmans nigger, will llkoly bo back to back our Gover nor In the Senate: Einlay is making feeble headway against Strait, and straightway Strait will bo returned; I/Jar will probably bo supplanted by tho Inevitable .T. Willie Stokes; Me Lauron of tho Pee Deo will go back In lino foathor, supported by the Alliance, and without tho aid or sympathy of tho dictator. Tlllman will probably go to the Senate and sit alongside of Sona tor Irby clad In tho panoply of Mars and equipped with pitchforks. Senator Tillman must tako with him an Edgo flold boy for nago as tho avorago Amer ican lud will bo timid about coming noar a modorn Pollphomus. Col. McClung, a hero of Mississippi, gave a follow in tho lobby of a hotel a good kicking. McClung pass'ng down tho street saw the fsjlowhohad kicked using his calf skins on another fellow who tamoly took It. McClung ex pressing surpriso was answorod by his man: "Colonol, yon and I know who to kick." Just so. And Tlllman, Irby and Gantt know who thoy woro donling with too; it is /hardly necossary to spocify, but whoro aro Kllorbo, Tindal, shell, Farloy, Popoand othors, not to bo personally particular, if you ploasg? The County Campaign meetings closed in tho Court House in this city on Thursday last. It was slimly at tended?frazzled out. Tho candidates spoke in tho campaign, candidates for tho Houso of Representatives down to Coroner. Tho aspirant to tho offlco of Treasurer gavo his qualiflcasions, bas ing them on his belief br nonbollef on what bo called "Reform." As a quali fication for Auditor ho was required to stato whether or not u Constitutional Convention was wanted. Wo still think that these and liko quostious woro fit and propor for logislatlvo can didates, but still think also a mans vlows on Constitutional Convention or no Convention immatorial as to his fit ness for Auditor or Troasurcr. In this wo may bo wrong, and for somo noblo purposo invlsiblo to this blind nnti and all his associates, tho roason of tho thing may bo there all tho samo. Not all of us can seo into ovorything. "Thero aro more things in Hoavcn and earth, Horatio, Than aro droamt of In your Philoso phy." ? All that Is left la to mako up our tiekots as host wo can and voto for men best fitted for tho oflloes. For tho financial and businoss offices thero aro many candidates and tho county wants business qualifications. * * * There is nothing so charming as to haveoiio's noighborssympathizing with us In distress; it Is pleasant while mournful to tho soul. We eondono with Ellorbo, Tlndal and all those who aro yet to fool tho stroko of Joab. In advance wo eondono with many who are to lose tho offices. Remember, they aro not ours by any right; they aro the gift of tho people At last, it is not so bad; and it might bo worse. A knot of good old ladies in tho war times met and compared their troublos. Ono had lo?ta father, ono a dear husband an oth er a brother, and they wept. But these woro light misfortunes. Ono dear old lady consoled them, with: Your dis tresses aro groat, but not liko mine: wait 'till you loso a "nigger" and you will know what it is to sulTor. It might bo worse, friends. * * v As wo suggosted in a former issue all is lost, lo3t. Every Democratic Stato, South, North, East and West (oven unto Texas and tho pillars of Hercu les,) ondorso Crovcr Cleveland. South Carolina stands as usual unique, alone, cursing and damning poor Grover. Governor Tillman carrying tho Stute in his breeeees pocket stands tiptoe looking out for light to broak in the West. When tho "Sun do movo" as the Rev. Richmond darkey would say. then we may have tho light from that quarter of tho groat olrouramundlne circle. * * H Partisanship will pass away: com mon sense will eventually rule among the whito people of South Carolina. They will all get togother. Remem ber this and bo charitable. Extreme zeal and partisanship are out of place. Voto for true men: vote for efficient men: vote for business men; voto for men who can think: vote for men qualified to discharge the business of the office to which they aspire. Put passion aside. * * * Whaley, Reformer of Charleston, and other Reformers whaled Reformer Ivecstor of the Register at Columbia on Wednesday night In the lobby of the Jerome Hotel, Columbia. Then Larry Gantt wiped up tho Register and all the Reform brotherhood with the same Whaloy, making him temporary chairman of the suggestors. * * * .ludgo James Aldrieh at Aikcn de cides the Dispensary Act of 18011 un constitutional. This is in tho teeth of Judge Tlllman's decision. Judge Al driteh is a good Tillman Judge and there is no linis to his use of tho Pres idents english. * * At tho speaking on Thursday last tho candidates answered tho catichism questions us a rule categorically and all worthy of the first honor. It is a pity there aro not offices to go round and so nianj good fellows must take back seats. * * ? W. II. Timmorman In a letter to tho News and Courier, says Yoldell Is "eminently due" endorsement by tho Reformers, considering his "loyalty," amid very trying circumstances.
