HOUGH, Jeweler and Stationer. ____ , I Oolliipse ol 'IVii Story Building New York, March 2.?At leafrt nine persons are dead anil more than fifteen injured, several fatally, by the collapse of a ten story apartment building, known as the Darlington, in the course of construction at Forty sixth street and Sixth Avenue, today. From thirty to fifty workmen were carried down, many ot whom were killed outright. In falling the building ruined ten of the twelve stories of the rt-Hr portion 01 ine I'atterson hotel, which adjoined on the rear, one woman guest being dangerously injured, while a waiter and a kitchen helper were bin ied under the debris, Several bodies werd soon after removed from the ruins of the Darliugton building and the ealvage corps of the fire depart ment began to tear down the remnants of the westerly wall. As they did so, pcreams were heard from under the wooden sidewalk, and Kev. Father Mc(riunity went down among the aeons ana through the spaces gave final absolution. The building was intended for an apartment hotel. It had been built up and inclosed for about fix stories, and the framework had gone higher. The boiler used to supply power to the hoisting machine exploded about an hour after the men returned from lunch this afternoon. The explosion weakened the lower supports of the building and the whole bulk of iron and stone collapsed. The noise of the explt<?ion ami the collapse of the building was beard for blocks around. Great crowds ran to the scene. Fortunately the ruins did not catch fire immediately and the work of rescue was begun at once. There was sufficient warning of the impending crash to enable those on the lower floors to escape. So complete was the collapse that the top sill of the debris were level with what had been the second story. Several of the injured, who have been removed to the hospitals, are reported as being in a critical condition. Foreman Hatpin, in charge of the work on the building, was nr rested soon after the building collapsed. He believes that, at least, twentv men are still huried in the ruins, but says he heard no exploaion. The Name Witch Hazel. The name Witch Ilazel ia much abused. E. C.
