Sixteen natives of the Pelew Islands in the North Pacific recently made an involuntary canoe voyage to Formosa, which anthropologists find interesting. As reported by Consul Davidson the voyage seems to add proof to a current theory of the manner in which the innumerable islands of Oceanica were settled by man. The Pelew Islands lie east of the southern groups of the Philippines. Sixteen savages in three canoes with outriggers were fishing near one of the islands when a gale blr up and carried them out to sea. They had nothing to eat but fish. They were driven about for sixty days, in which time they probably traveled sixteen hundred miles, and at last sighted Formosa, an island of which they had never heard. Almost dead from exhaustion, they landed and were kindly treated by the natives of the island. When they were able to eat, and regained their strength thev were sent to Hongkong. thence to the Caroline Islands, and from there home in a trading schooner. Alter more than three months' absence they were hailed by their triends as risen Irom the dead. It is by such involuntary voyages, anthropologists believe, that man was placed on many of the widely scattered groups of the Pacific islands. A German 'student, Mr Otto Sittig, has collected a irreat manv similar instances. covering a period of a century and a half. A Cure for Eczema. Few Natives of the North Sent to roiigress From tho South. vVashington Post. There are few men in congress who are natives of southern states. but who have moved north and represent northern constituencies. There is but one man who is a native of a northern state who lias been elected from the south, and in this case he comes from a border state. Very many men born in eastern states are now representing western states. This is very natural, as the tide of immigration has been from east to west, and ihe west has been peopled by the east. It is a rare thing, however, to find a man in congress from the east who was born in the west. Hut there are some. February Will Be a Regular ] Storm Period. ! The forecasts of Iiev.Irl R Hicks < for the month ot February are < ominous of a regular storm period, ; including rain, snow and sleet, J cold waves and disagreeable ] weamer generally. A summary 1 of his predictions will prove in- 1 teresting to those who watch them f as the month progresses, with the understanding that the forecasts . cover the entire country. Lie i starts out by saying that storm 1 areas will begin to form by the ( 1st over the western parts of the ? country, and wide areas of rain and snow will pass eastwardly across the country during the 1st ] to the 4th. The disturbance continues until about the 10th, with cloudy, murky and sleety weather, i and if heavy snow and sleet storms 1 do not appear during the first 1 four days of the month, such storms will almost certainly develop from the 6th to the 9th. The first teu days of February are to be the most general and destructive sleet periods of the winter. General storms of rain and snow j are to occur about the 14th, 15th | and 16th, culminating with the ' new moon on the 16lh, bringing { storms of a tropical nature south- < ward, with change to blizzard f features in the west and north, ? which will be followed by a high c barometer and cold wave from i the 20th to 22d. The last regular storm period for February is 6et down by Mr. Hicks as being ] central on the 24th with the dis turbing influence reaching from the 22d to the 27th. As the < month goes out, generally fair and colder weather will prevail, with the harnmptfir fallinc in oH. vance of the reactionary storms due the first three days in March. Mysterious Circumstance.
