Published Wednesdays by Enthkprisk Publishing Co. A. J. CLAHK. Editor. One Year, ... $1.00 Six Months, - - .50 Three Mor tis, - - .25 IN ADVANCE. Wednesday, January 20, 1904 The National Democratic con vontion will be held in the city of St. Louis, Mo , July 0, 1904c The saddest day in the history ol Chicago, a eiiv that has had more than her share ol calamitous days, was Wednesday, l)e comber 30, 1903 A matinee, largely attended, was on at the new lr< quois theatre. Nearly 1,800 people were in the audience, uine-tenths of them women and children Fire broke out on the stage. The asbestos curtain that should have shut oil' the flames irom the audience, hung suspended and refused to come down. The ooenimrs at the trout - f n" * " and back oi the house created the draft of a roaring furnace, ami swept the flames out underneath the hall-drawn curtain, over the helpless audience, and, in shorter time than it takes to tell, the house of pleasure became a house of death. By gas and flame, the death list has reached, at last reports, the awful total of 59f> Think of it, barely two out of every three people who went into that building came out alive ! Five members of one family per ished. Twenty-four school teachers were burned to death. Again and again it happened that two I 1 1 1 ninicin, a UUBIJtlUU UIIU W1IO, H brother and sister, two or three, or even lour, young children of the same family perished. Such a list of desolated, grief-stricken homes from one catastrophe is scarcely known in history, and Chicago can never recover from the gloom and horror of this dis aster. Nineteen of the dead were policy-holders with the New York Life for $30,736.15, an unusually small amount, because the disas ter occurred at a matinee at which there were very few men. Nine of those insured were lady school teachers who each had $1,000 in f nrunno rv, o/l a ?xrt?..?Ll? 4 - 4 1?* ? .' I.KIIW) maun uajrauio II) I Ilt*ir mothers or sisters. After their arduous duties during the school session they had pone to this attractive place of amusement for an hour's pleasure, when, with scarcely a moment's warning, they are in the throes ot the dying! A fellow tfho is aiways switching his occupation never gets well started on the main line to success. Opposed to Both Mr. Editor? There are two gieat evils in our midst that I feel that the good people of our country should try to put down. In writing this 1 hope 1 may encourage someone who will take a leading hand in putting these evils down. These evils of which I speak are 4k Dealing in Whisky," and ' Gambling in Cotton Futures/' neither of which, to our shame, is against the laws ol our state, or against the laws of our town It is lawtul to sell whisky and it is lawful to buy whiskey, and it is lawful to get drunk it you will just get out of town ; but it being lawful does not make it right. I am sorry tor any one who is willing to sell whisky for the money that is in it ; 1 am sorry for the man who drinks it and can't keep fiom getting drunk ; I am sorry lor the drunkard's son who is just beginning to follow his father; I am sorry for the drunkard's daughter who buries her face in her hatidker chief; I am sorry for the drunkard's wife who can't keep back her tears; I am sorry for the drunkard's children as they shiver l. .....i i : V> | I 11 i will (lliu m# it 1/1114 ' I't'^^lll^l biead?1 am ho sorry ; I want to help them all. I feel like it we could put down the di-p<?usary we would be doing the drinking men and their families a ureal favor. I am not mad with the drunkard because he drinks, but I am sorry lor him and want f< help him out ot trouble. I want to help make this a tree count n ?tree Irom whisky. The drink tng man is bound. It is lawtul to write out or sell cotton contracts, and it is lawtul to buy contracts, but that does not make it right to deal in them I It is not right lor our government to allow this gambling to oe con tinned.
