E Middleton ol this place was shot last night at Jefl'erHon by a young man by the name of Ross Miller. Some time ago Miller exhibited a new Remington typewriter here and offered it for sale at a bargain to several parties. Mr. T. H. Burch of the firm of W. T. Wedgeworth & Co, traded him his old machine lor the new one and gave $10 to boot. Mr. Burch had but 1 it I le use for the machine and offered it for sale. After some correspondence with a Columbia firm, he succeeded in making what he thought a sale, but when he carried the machine down it was identified by the Columbia firm as being their machiue and Mr. Burch came back minus $10 and his typewriter. Hearing that Miller was at Jefferson he went up there yesterday accompanied by his brother in-law, Mr. J. E. Middle ton. They carried no warrant, as their int ention was to see Miller and have him mak" the matter satisfactory. Mr. Middleton spoke to Miller upon approach ing him and in a joking way said: "Consider yourself under arrest."
