LANCASTER ' ENTERPRISE. Published Wednesdays by Entbiukisk Publishing Co. A. J. CLARK. Editor. One Year, - - - $1.00 Six Months, - - .50 Three Mor hs, - - .25 IN ADVANCE. MM Wednesday, June 3, 1903. . LLW- - ? . - - TOO MUCH WATER. Kansas Citv, Mo., June 1.? With gas and electric lights ex tinguished, the waterworks shut down ami the city practically at t he m ernv nf the first fire thnt I sh^ll break out ; with railroad <v * transportation feeble and uncertaiu Kausas City may,if the waters do not recede within the next three days, be compelled to fight lor her very life. And tonight the 6kies are dark and lowering ?the rain is tailing heavily? more stormy weather is sweep ing up from the west and the insatiable river is stoutly holding its owu. It is practically stationary tonight, but what the flood has it keeps, and there i6 no certain promise of When it will z recede. The stage tonight is / 34 9. Chief Connor of the y weather bureau says that, while rs the outlook is for continued rains, it would necessitate a very heavy fall if the present high water is to continue. The first authentic information from Kansas City, Kas., was re- 1 ceived tonight. In that district i 20,000 people are homeless. Many have been drowned but the , number cannot be estimated The property loss has been heavy. The situation there is a parallel to the situation here? apparently no better, and no worse. There is no great probability mat there will be turlher loss ot life, it the river does not rise very suddenly. All through the wholesale district and in the east and west bottoms, there are people still in houses?many ot them anxious to be taken away? a goodly number ot them content to remain where there are, with all the chances of the Hood. The police have done wonders today in rescuing people, and have probably brought 250 of them sate to itie high ground since sunrise. One hundred and titty , of these were brought to the viaduct at 'Twelfth street and the ot tiers were saved in the east and wesi bottoms by boats. Twenty people w* re taken trom the Martin school and thirty from O'Brien's lodging house in the east bottoms. The rest ot them were brought in singly. Tonight, iix the east and west bottoms, a number ot obstinate people are / still clinging to their homes. Although the police have run boats beneath their windows and offered ,o save them, they refuse to leave and will take their chances for another uighl. at least. Tl.ere is no possible way of getting at the names ol the dead and no chance ol forming any es tioiate that can coniidently be termed accurate. It is likely, ho wover, that the number of fatalities it: Kansas City, Mo., will mimbor fifty. The financial damage is about as great now as **" it is lik*ely to become, unless the water rises much higher. OAK I) OF THANKS.
