WHY IT TURNKI) BALK. great deal of oomment haa been mad* iu the newspapers orer the faot that ao important a train as the Palm Limited should have been tnrned back twentytwo miles iu order to take aboard Mrs. Cornelius Vanderbiit and a party of friends. They were at the station ready to take the train at Piueland, but it went on by, beiug finally stopped at Har* deevilie and brought back for the party. The circumstauce has been tele* graphed all over the country and the impression seems to have got* ton out that the train turned back simply because these people are millionaires and persons of tufiuence. This is not the case as has been learned hero, it seems ihat. Piueland had been "bulletined" as a llag station to Btop this traiu. Tne engineer hud overlooked the tact, it being oue of no great importance in view of the tact that i'luelaud is a side track out iu the woods. However, beiug such a station passengers had a per'eel right to board the tram at i,hat place. When toe Palm Limited hove in sight it was hugged, but the engineer not Uaviug noticed that it had been made a slop station, Went 011 by. All attempt was made to stop ine train at tne ue.it station tvuowu an 'tinman, but the operator lor tmmereaaou ia.ied to do ho. When toe train got to Hardeeville the club car was detached and waa ruu back lor ttie party. It was stated by one familiar with railroad ruiea and law a ,that this had to oe done or the company woum have neon liable tor damageb. it waa tuther atated that if a negro had desired to get on the train under similar circumstances that It would have been necevsary to go back for him if a suit of damages was to be avoided, i ne railroad, therelore, holds that it did not send back the train because the wouldbe passengers were millionairs, but that it was done for the protection of the road.
