victim of a peculiar accident today.
Near Lexington avenue,
contractors are excavating for a
new building. and have reached
a depth of 25 feet. In place of
the sidewalk along the excavation
a temporary foot bridge has
been constructed, on either side
of which there are railings. At
the bottom of this excavation she

jumped into the hole and
thRt he had been within eight
feet of the woman when she did
so. Fisherman Bays he saw the
woman raise both hands above
her head and heard her cry out,
"Here goes." Before he could
seize her she dived into the excavation.
Investigation showed that she
was Anna Lee Merritt, of Mount
Airy, N. O. A Miss Chambers
says that Miss Merritt has many
friends among the nurses here.
She is still in a critical condition
at the Presbyterian Hospital.
