What the red clay hills need more than fertilizers is good plowing and the use of the sub80iler. The need for tracing ip largely due tl?? constant shallow plowing of the surface. This thin surface soil underlai d by a I compact clay pet filled with water in the torrential rains common in the South, and in its houulluid state must run down hill, as there is nowhere else for it to go, and leave the hard clay to form a pall and then & gnjly as the Winter frost softens the top of * the clay. We had rether undertake to cultivate these hills without the terraces, but with deep a breaking, than to work them as they are generally worked with the terraces. In fact, we have cultivated the same kind of land in hills much steeper than the average, right up under the Blue Ridge, with never a terrace iu the field. But the land was not kept in a clean cultivated crop year after year, but whenever it] was broken there was'a sod turned under, and the subsoiler went i down to break the land deeply and give room for water to soak in instead of running off.
