An idiom may defy logic. l Tnke the double negative, for example. A boy says, "I ha'nt had no time to get my lesson." ' His language may be objectionable, but his meaning is undoubted. The teacher understands it as ho intends her to understand it, but she has heard that two negatives makes an ? affirmative, and she retorts: [ "Ah, you mean that you have i had some time ! You have said j the opposite of what you mean." The laugh is on the boy?if he j can be laughed out of his double ? negatives, so much the better. 1 Yet the teacher is wrong. The | two negatives in his sentence [ do not make an affirmative, for I tliey are neither so meant nor i are they so taken by the hearerAccording to a very old English ! idiom, one negative strengthens another. The idiom has ceased to be good English, but it has ; not changed its meaning.
